Hello everyone This is just a heads up to invite you to join me and the great Martin Simpson for an Instagram Live chat this Tuesday at 7:30pm. We will be talking our favourite guitar makers around the world, the challenges faced by the luthiery community and the future of the scene as we see it. I will do my best to turn the resulting footage into a YouTube video for those of you who don't use Instagram. For those that do, I hope you'll join us! All the best Michael

Martin probably owns other builders guitar as well and certainly has in the past. No PRS since they seem to have disappeared. I assume the endorsement ran out. Cynical I know but it happens and I don't blame him. Should be interesting though nonetheless. Phil

I hope the two of them don't jsut bang on about the same 3 luthiers ;-) This from wiki: Paul Reed Smith Angelus – Simpson currently endorses PRS acoustic guitars, and his signature model is available to purchase. Stefan Sobell Martin Simpson Signature Model – for many years, Simpson's main performing guitars were made by British luthier Stefan Sobell.
He is known to have owned and played guitars by a number of renowned American luthiers including Ervin Somogyi, Jeff Traugott[16] and Bill Tippin, as well as British luthiers including Ralph Bown.Which three? I first came across Stefan Sobell's guitars having heard MS play one un-miked at the Holywell Music Rooms early mid-90s, it became my Holy Grail. I'm pretty sure that 'A Closer Walk With Thee' is recorded on a Bown and I understand he doesn't play his Somogyi much because he doesn't get on with it. As we've all probably seen, he has two builds on the go atm, one by Rosie (Turnstone) and the other Rory (Taran). So... which ones did he talk about with Mr Watts? Jonny

jonnymosco True, but he does trade in a lot of his guitars! He seems to move them on regularly. When I went on one of his workshoips (an excellent experience) I was surprised by how many there had Sobells. When I asked them about their guitars quite a few of them had bought them drom Martin after a previous workshop! I've no idea what he was talking about in the podcast as I don't have access to Instagram! I shall have to wait until the YouTube version is up!

I enjoyed it. jonnymosco I have that CD and does indeed use his Bown baritone on it amongst other instruments but unfortunately it does not say on which tracks. I'll have a listen later when my granddaughter has gone home and see if I can tell. It should be possible because it's quite distinctive on Leaves of Life if I remember correctly Phil

Thanks for posting that up. As well as being a fine guitarist, I have a feeling that Mr Simpson could write a substantial book just about his interactions with luthiers and guitar builders around the world. It was certainly very interesting hearing both of your views on the differences between some of the 'pioneer' luthiers and those who have striven to adapt, modify and improve on the template designs of Martin and Gibson. Only problem with listening to this is that it gives one a rather bad case of impending GAS.... (PS - I didn't know you were from Durham michaelwatts )

Right then
Here you go, an hour of Martin Simpson and I having a great time talking about guitars. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
There is a little bit of grown-up language. Shouldn’t come as a surprise nor as an offence but you never know.
All the best
M
