I know it makes no significant difference to the sound, but aesthetically it puts me off a guitar.
I'm not so bothered about small, individual buttons but when there's a rectangle cut out of it then I just don't like it.
Am I alone in this?

I'm sure you're not alone, I don't remember ever hearing anyone express a positive view of barn-door electrics. I'm not *too* bothered myself - it would be a deal-breaker on a 'nice' acoustic, but for the kind of sub £200 electro-acoustic you usually see them on I can live with it if I need to, and indeed have owned several with them cut in over the years.

Not a fan. I've got it on a tenor guitar and it looks pretty 'orrible I think. If I was spending a lot of money on a guitar I definitely wouldn't go for it.

The money thing is interesting.
I've seen this lovely Furch Red Master's Choice guitar. They look great and sound fantastic. The workmanship and the quality of materials is sky high.
And then they have this chunk cut out of the side. It's a great shame. I'd rather have it without any electronics at all than have to look at that.

Furch let you design a custom guitar on their website and order via a dealer - I've been considering going down that road myself. Pickup systems (and no pickup) are among the various options. It pushes the price up a bit, although probably not that much over the cost of a Red Master's Choice, which is pretty much top of their standard range. I think they are also open to making adjustments to the standard specs of their guitars (short scale, deep body, etc), so you could always ask the dealer if they could order you one without the pickup system.

Personally I'd never buy a guitar with a barn door preamp...

I wasn't going to buy it new. Someone else ordered it like that and had it built.

Not a fan of side mounted knobbage of any kind really. You could always take out the preamp etc and you have a ready made, if somewhat inelegant, soundport!

Put me off Taylor guitars when every guitar came designated CE, (cutaway electric) with the Fishman Prefix barn door system installed.

I'd never buy an expensive guitar with electronics in the side. I have a cheap one with one in though. It's okayish sounding plugged in.

I'm not a big fan of side mounted electronics but they are quite practical at times, I have a very battered Taylor 614CE with the "barn door" electronics and I like the plugged in sound maybe more than the ES2 system. I picked up a Martin OMC16E with the Roland COSM side mounted pickup, great sounding pickup but had issues with the undersaddle piezo which would occasionally cut out, - the controls were extremely intuitive allowing 3 stored EQ settings. Martin customer "support" were of no help when it came to sourcing a replacement as it's a discontinued model. I eventually replaced the piezo with a fishman one, it works but the sound of the Roland one was better to my ear. I might just install a k&k and be done with it and have no batteries to run down but then that does leave a useless lump of electronics in the side..

...I don't remember ever hearing anyone express a positive view of barn-door electrics. Today's the day. I love both my Takamines (ef360s and ef2341sc) and the "barn door" preamps can be swapped in a matter.of seconds which has been a gig-saver at times and a time/money saver when repair or routine maintenance is required. I have others with soundhole rim controls and none and they all do a job but the Taks have pretty much everything I need to hand.
