Thanks to all for sharing. It has been interesting to learn the issues others are facing and some recommendations.
I had a scan last week and that revealed the cause of it all is a torn tendon. This can commonly bring on Frozen shoulder. I'm booked in with a physio, so we will see what happens.
I definitely need a guitar with a slightly smaller body than what I have now. I am seriously eyeing up a Wee Lowden.

I have a virtually brand new sunburst Collings Baby 2H I’d part with. Original owner but never played by Chris Difford.
Sports physio best.

James Bear in mind that a smaller body (like a Wee Lowden) means leaning over or using a rest to hold the guitar up to enable playing comfortably (or using a strap). Short scale and 12 fretter may help alleviate your shoulder issue as tension in your back/shoulders will be reduced. Jonny

A 12 fret 00 is the route I have gone down for the LH problem, not lacking in sound, but more comfortable and undemanding physically. Jonny

Jonny I also find 12 fret smaller bodies (00 size or about 14.5" lower bout) the most comfortable by far, the 12 fret position just feels more natural to me. Saying that, I also now always have the guitar on my left leg with a support or cushion which seems to allow my right shoulder a more relaxed position and really free up left hand movement. Some years back I had a yearning for a small parlour and got hold of a lovely K Yairi Rag which I think was about 0 size, possibly a bit smaller. It was a lovely guitar, but too small for me to hold comfortably and despite my best efforts, I could never get comfortable with it.

I have had shoulder and neck issues over the last 10 years. The first problem however was frozen shoulder. They explained it to me by reference to a jelly like substance within the joint that makes the movement of the arm bone within the shoulder joint possible.
This was in 2011. I woke up one day and quite simply couldn't raise my left arm. Doctors said it was very strange, diagnosed frozen shoulder, but said that they had no idea, even in 2011, why this gel like substance that lubricates the joint should suddenly decide to stiffen. They said it would pass on it's own, and it did about 5 months later. I was about 40 at the time.
Having had other issues that have affected my playing, notably cervical radiculopathy (crushed disc in the neck), what saved me, on all occasions, was changing posture to the classical position. It took some getting used to, but the classicists were right, it's much better for both hands and far less onerous in terms of the stress that playing guitar puts on your arms, shoulders and neck. I invested in a 'Neck Up' which I still use when I play live, although for convenience I use a foot stool when practicing at home.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and advice. I have my first physio booked for Friday. There is still the possibility surgery will be required. Let’s see how it goes.
So today I took delivery of a Lowden WL-35 Guatemalan Rosewood and Alpine Spruce. Used, but looks brand new, it could honestly have been sold as new.
It is a perfect fit. I can sit and play with no issue at all. It was amazing to be able to play again. I didn’t realise just how much I missed it.
I will change the strings to my preferred type and have a proper play at the weekend, but based on the first couple of hours, I think I made a good choice. I certainly didn’t need to get something as expensive and was close to going for a Faith Mercury. However, I went down a Wee Lowden rabbit hole, I talked myself out of it until I saw this higher spec used one available. I put in an offer £500 below the listing and it was accepted. Slept on it and decided that life is too short and if ever something similar would be available I may not have the funds sitting around. So decided it was now or never.
Anyway, I am playing again, and have a great little guitar that I will hopefully keep for a long time and maybe hand over to my daughter who is 6 and has already said she would like to share it with me.
