I'm curious about those Martin Monel strings... I've tried those and the D'Addario Nickel Bronze, I believe they are very similar alloys. They look, feel and sound very similar. They are long lasting for non-coated strings, LOUD, and have a very mid-forward sound, good sustain, clean and well defined bass. Maybe ideal for rootsy, folky, bluesy stuff? I just like the tone on my Faith better than any other strings I tried (all the usual suspects, 80/20 and PB, Martin SP and D'Addario EJ16 etc.) Definitely worth giving them a try if that sounds like something you might like. I tried them on my Lowden and hated them though, was like someone had put a blanket over the guitar. So FWIW and YMMV etc.

If it's easier to play I'd look at the setup. Assuming the strings are the same on both 1/16" wouldn't make much difference in tension. Is the action lower on the Yamaha? I've just had my 12 string set up and it's much easier to play. No. I've been playing it again and it's not the action. Other people love that guitar and I love the sound of it. Maybe it's the neck (but my Larry OM is my most comfortable). I dunno. It's a great guitar. Maybe it's in my head. I love it but somehow it irks me. That's why I'm always thinking about selling it, then I play it for a while and change my mind...... So I adjusted the strap length - I normally play quite high up on the body and I lowered it towards my waist - and now it sings. Yay. And Doh!

So I adjusted the strap length - I normally play quite high up on the body and I lowered it towards my waist - and now it sings. Yay. And Doh! Great news! It is. I've always sort of liked it but always found it awkward at the same time. The luthier who sets up my guitars told me to never sell it and I have a lot of respect for him so I've kept it despite my misgivings. I've advertised it and come close to selling it but never been able to go through with it. Turns out he was right. Plays like a dream. Soon I hope to be happy enough with my efforts to post something so you can hear it.

Yes,Newtone low tension and Santa cruz parabolic low tension are the only strings I use now, they suit me better than everything else I have tried, and a bonus is they also seem to last for ages ..They don’t seem to go “off” like many others,I have had Newtones ans SC parabolics on for nearly 12 months before replacing them.

Hi there kaydee, and welcome to the Forum. Hope you'll enjoy it here - good to see you leaping in right away. Feel free to introduce yourself to all in the , er, Introductions section and maybe tell us a little about yourself/your music/your instrument(s). I have had some of those Santa Cruz Parabolic thingies sitting around for a while and still not tried them - must get a round tuit. Keith

Newtone Heritage and Straight Up Strings are my fav's at the moment, followed by Santa Cruz but they are expensive

You know, I thought Monel was a new material! But I read an article in Guitarist magazine about strings. Its been around since the 50s!

Yes, Monel is pre 80/20, so that's OLD! Good for vintage tones. Fat Monels on your acoustic and fat flatwounds on your electric, for authentic 50s tone (or something...)

Also there's a big difference between 80/20 and phosphor bronze, which tend to be like 92/20.The extra copper is said to make a big difference

Yes, PBs from 1974 onwards or something, originally by D'Addario, so a lot of my fave acoustic guitar tones were recorded before that (David Crosby etc.), so am presuming they were 80/20s (they don't sound like Monels on the recordings).
