My main instrument is: Whatever I'm building...

A while back a member of this forum asked me to build him a 12 string based around a J185 body shape (like Leo's). Timber selection was quickly decided and since then there has been the ping-pong game of emails and messages back-n-forth working out some of the details. A few mock-ups have been produced and we have finally a finished visual design. I'm still working on the internal stuff that doesn't usually get seen but I'm sure as the build progresses those details will be shown.
The final mock-up:
The soundboard is Sitka spruce, back and sides are figured walnut. The neck is mahogany with central laminations. Tuners are Shertler's and it's to have K&K's fitted.
Purflings and rosette are based around a crow's foot pattern with additional coloured lines. Bindings are lacewood.
I'vve started work on the rosette and the front halves have been joined. TBC...

Really look forward to seeing this develop and possibly eventually see the real thing if we get the chance. I like the Shertler tuners, very well made and responsive. Will be nice to se the walnut too.

I always think that if you're going to make a 12 strings, make big one! Always had a soft spot of that Gibson J shape. Look forward to seeing the progress. Cheers Gary

Assembling the centre back strip Black and white veneers are 0.3mm and the red is 0.6. These were glued up overnight and two strips cut off this morning and clamped either side of a crows foot purfling strip. Superglue used between each clamp then the clamps shifted and more SG added...

Looks great, Francis. I wonder who that could be for. I think we should be told, scorpiodog , don't you? Remember Leo the guy is shy - always stands at the back, doesn't drink (much)... He's a folk singer

He's been described as many worse things than that, I can assure you francis. Often by me.

Dusted off the Fox bender and completed the side bending ops last night. I've clamped the sides in their mould and will leave them to completely dry out before trimming to length.
