Just had this book out from Notts Library and what an interesting book it is. Its available in hard and softback
Isle of noises : conversations with great British songwriters by Daniel Rachel.
Not only is it a very interesting journey through British songwriters and their songs over a 50 year period but is is also full of their experiences, in easy to read question and answer format, of composing, recording, collaborating etc. And of course the conclusion is that there are dozens of different ways to write a song and none are the 'right way'.
e.g. Sting says that very often he will write a four-line verse or chorus song starting with the chorus (as the bit that glues it all together) and then on the four liners with rhymes on say lines 2 and 4, he writes the LAST line first (he calls it the 'clinch' line) and then works backwards over the other 3 lines. This way he avoids having a weak last line which is driven by a less important second line. He also more often than not writes the music before even considering the lyrical content or even subject. But not always!
The interviews with people like Ray Davies, Brian Ferry, Sting. Jimmy Page, Robin Gibb etc are fascinating.
A great dip in dip out book.
