Was talking to my ex wife yesterday who needs a new bridge for her cello. She said it was going to cost £89 for the cheapest bridge then £800 to have it set up !!!! I think we guitarists have it lucky (hundreds of pounds for a set of strings too)

But £800 seems rather excessive for a routine task. Or maybe I should retrain…

I have a double bass that I will be restoring which requires a bridge, tailpiece, spike and a ebony patch on the edge of the fingerboard (had to think there for a second..i guess they're not called fretboards as they don't have frets..). I'll be setting it up myseld - if i do a half decent job of it I might start advertising my services. (£800 does seem very excessive!)
Now where's my angle grinder and sledgehammer??

Mind you this is with Phil Brown in Newbury, who is very well respected.

But I guess a cello fingerboard gets more wear than a guitar’s.

It's a bit like the Kostal argument isn't it? If it gets her the sound she wants then it is worth it and the money is not wasted - £300 and not the sound that is wanted is £300 wasted. How do you put a price on the feeling that it is just not right. Mind you, I think I must still go by 1970's prices so everything seems expensive to me.

My wife is a cellist and I can attest to just how much everything seems to cost; strings are outrageously expensive and we should all be glad that guitar strings aren't!!
Bizarrely you can buy a really decent quality full size cello secondhand for a few hundred quid, normally including a hard case. OK, antique cellos can be fabulously expensive and most justify the high price tag but to my ears a good quality Romanian cello represents amazing value for money when you consider how much work goes into producing them.
So......£800 for a set up seems to be ludicrous unless the cello needs structural work. I'd look for another luthier!
