When you're setting up a banjo, how do you know if the head is tensioned enough?

I've defo done that before... and worse besides there's a whole other thread right there.. always notice after the first string wind too Of course my string changing technique is impeccable and beyond reproach. I would never make a silly mistake

When you're setting up a banjo, how do you know if the head is tensioned enough? It sort of depends on the sound you want. Less tension for plunk, more for ping 😉 for my taste, I like the head nice and tight, you can use a drum tension wrench if you want to be precise, tensioning the hooks on opposite sides one at a time, or like me, just a standard hex wrench, racking each hook nut up as tight as it goes without straining.

Thanks, I'll experiment. I was a bit wary of tightening too much and tearing it.

Surely they're all around... that's one of the things about banjos I smashed the tool rest mount on my wood turner but it wasn't until I tried to find a new one that I found out it's called a banjo, presumably because of the shape of the screw slot.
