Find myself more and more drawn to Open D which can create some wonderful sounds (not into the pure blues/slide/dobro stuff yet). For me this tuning works for some songs, not for others. But it's also introduced me to some new songs/artists by searching on YouTube. It can be very simple to play as well once you've found your way round it, which helps people like me! Here's a very simple song by an artist I'd never heard of (Lyle Lovett) and this cover in Open D is much better than the original.
And, at risk of offending my friends who, like me, are lifelong Sandy D fans, I can even do a decent version of Who Knows Where the Time Goes in Open D whereas I find standard tuning a challenge without being able to play the damned bar chords well enough.

FFJ No barre chords needed in standard tuning for WKWTTG played in E John, esp if you can thumbover the low E (or at least damp/not strum it) - the top two strings can be left to ring open throughout. Try it - sounds nice. E - 022100. F#m - 244200. G#m - 466400. A - 507600. Am - 507500. B - 799800 Keith

I'm afraid the thumb over doesn't work for me even with my low profile necks as I have little flexibility in my thumb and can only use it on the 6th string when not having to fret the 4th and 5th strings. I do like to hear the bottom string as well, particularly fingerstyle. John

I love open D - I think most guitars somehow sound like they are happier with everything just a bit less tense and all the harmonics in sympathy.
I am very much into the pure blues/slide/dobro stuff, but I think it works very well for other things too.
My version of Fare Thee Well/Dink's Song is done in open D:
Also my song Young Free & Beautiful:
(sorry that neither of those is a video where you can see my fingers - I should probably remedy that!)
If you do fancy having a go at some slide stuff mostly you just need to know that I=000000 IV=555555 and V=777777 and a lot of the trick to sounding "in tune" is to make sure the slide is always moving.

Loved that version of Lyle Lovett's tune, FFJ - beautifully played and sung! Splendid stuff.
My earliest memory of Lyle Lovett is the wonderful "She's No Lady, She's My Wife"- great song!

I like Open D too, John. Good few Joni Mitchell songs in open D; Big Yellow Taxi, Conversation, Chelsea Morning and Both Sides Now are all fairly manageable. I also play Simple Twist of Fate, but it’s a bit repetitive without an instrumental break. My favourite to play at the moment in open D is Paul Brady’s Lakes of Ponchartrain, but mine is very basic compared to his version.

Hi Vinny. yes JM used it a lot; have you tried 'You Turn me On (I'm a Radio)' which is good; run down is very similar to Simple Twist of Fate. I also like using it for, amongst others ... Colours Donovan Water is Wide Forever Roy Harper (thanks to Iain 'Lavaman' for this one) Running on Empty Jackson Browne Squeezebox The Who Brown Eyed Girl. VM Take it Easy Eagles John

It is a chap called Thomas Earle and I was using this as an example of a great song, normally done in standard tuning but which Thomas redid in open D. (Wish it had been me! ) FFJ
