I've been playing around with a TC harmonizer pedal, which is rather fun but not really my thing, and that set me to wondering. This thing can generate a harmony vocal from guitar and voice input, so is there a pedal that could generate a reasonable bass line rather than vocal? I can definitely see a use for that.

There are quite a few 'octave' pedals, which can generate an octave or more below the input note, but not sure what they sound like especially if you played more than one note at a time into them ?

The BOSS OC-3 or OC-5 are good examples of this kind of thing, although I haven't used one. Or the Electro Harmonix BASS9. I think they feature treating just the bottom strings in the guitar, giving an octave below, and beefing up the bass sound. I recently bought a Donner Octave Pedal because it was on sale for £25, and anything is worth a shot, but it seems to work well on single strings only.

Yes, I'm aware of octave pedals, but that isn't quite what I want. I thought that, since the TC Harmonizer can make a harmony vocal line from voice and guitar input, it might be possible to do the same for a harmonizing bass note. Or maybe not!
There was a sort of partial pickup that worked on the top or bottom two strings (can't remember what it was called) and that could give an octave below the bottom two strings.

Not sure if we are talking at cross purposes - sorry! The BOSS OC-5 has a knob which sets the note range where the effect is applied (so just the lower strings), and a lowest range setting applies the octave effect to only the lowest note in a chord. So the same as the partial pickup you mentioned? The Donner pedal I mentioned can be set to do a third or a fifth up or down for your harmonies ("Pitch up: From +2 to +24 semitones. Pitch down: From -2 to -24 semitones."), but it sounds messy unless you only play a single note.

I was idly looking at pedals and came across the Digitech Trio+. Not sure I need a band-in-a-box, but it certainly seems to do quite a good job of putting bass (and drums, should you want them) behind the guitar.
