Im looking for a really comfortable seat in my ongoing investigation into making guitar playing more comfortable. After years of playing sitting on the floor I'm looking for something that will support not just my bottom but preferably my back as well. Robbie

I think back pain originates from twisting or leaning over which is more to do with the position of the guitar as you play. No surprises from me, but I suggest a Guitarlift or Dynarette cushion or Gitano - they all allow you to sit square, evenly balanced on a chair with both feet flat on the floor.
Given the above, I sit on a piano stool or the edge of a dining chair with no support for my back as it is not necessary.
I've always admired your 'sit on the floor' playing...
Jonny

When Jonny was my (very much missed*) guitar teacher, we had this discussion at my first lesson, I think. I eschewed his suggestions of hoisting gizmos which stick to the guitar, but I have consistently used a foot stool to raise my right knee ever since. Partially as a result of this, I also sit on a piano stool, and don't need/have a back support. I don't play for more than an hour at a time, though.
I asked Will McNicol about posture a few weeks ago - he must play many hours a day. He reiterated that no back support is required if sitting up properly.
Now this doesn't count if you are snuggling on a sofa with a parlour guitar, a glass of wine and an open fire...
* We both moved away having lived within 15 minutes of each other. We tried the Skype thing, and it didn't work for me. Now this was before Covid, and the software and our expertise and acceptance is much better these days.

No that's what I call proper guitar playing! With two provisos - i) the glass and bottle are within reach ii) someone else has to keep getting up to stoke the fire. Keith

I've got a tenuto which I bought off a forum member here. I had a go at using it again last night but it just feels awkward having my body untwisted like that. Also the angle of attack of my right gand changes and affects the tone I want. I am most comfortable at the moment with a footstool for my right leg (not the more usual left as classical players would do). The guitar feels more secure and I can wrap my right arm around the body thus avoiding resting it on the top edge of the guitar. I know it's not ideal. All I have to do now is a get a more acceptable seat than the rickety drum stool I picked up outside someone's house that I have been using! Robbie

A carpenter friend of mine made me a version of thisIt folds flat, and lives behind a door in my bedroom (the base support leg hinges inwards and the top drops down). The rounded edges of the front of the seat and cutaway under your right leg make it especially comfortable. With the addition of a low footstool under my left foot, I have a set of ergonomics that work for my crumbling body. Brian

Would be good for busking. But...that price plus the shipping (bloody brexit)!

He used some surplus kitchen worktop for the seat base and other off-cuts for the rest. If you know a friendly joiner, I could email you some pictures and dimensions. Brian

Actually I have a piano stool that I use. I'm normally sat at the piano for whatever instrument I'm playing.

I take it not being in Europe wr come under the higher tier!
