Those of us of a certain age, growing up and starting guitar in the early 60s had fewer models to look up to when trying to become better players. There was Lonnie Donegan I suppose and Bert Weedon, but they weren't finger pickers, so only good for basic chords. We did have Ewan McColl and Peggy Seager over here I suppose. Well I have been doing what sad old men do and trying to catalogue my old vinyl collection, this is a slow process as I tend to want to play all of the old stuff that hasn't seen a stylus for decades. Anyway my collection of vintage Doc Watson recently emerged and I was captivated all over again. Of all of the players at the time Doc was a country mile above the rest, and his songs were the ones that I really wanted to play and they became the foundation of my early repertoire, I even bought a banjo because of him! Travis picking Deep River Blues like Doc became my guitar playing goal. Unfortunately Woody Guthrie is further down the alphabetical list so it'll be a while before I get to catalogue his music.

You’re not alone in citing him, Colin. Guy Clark reckons that he is up there with other wonders of the world. I have seen the David, I’ve seen the Mona Lisa too I have heard Doc Watson play “Columbus Stockade Blues.” I, on the other hand, don’t recall ever having heard him. Heard of him, certainly, but not him playing. So thanks for posting these.

I feel like I should know a lot more about Doc Watson than I do. I have the first album - with Deep River Blues, which one day I will master! - and there's some incredible flat-picking on there. And though a few of the more folksy songs don't do it for me ("Intoxicated Rat") the playing on tunes like Black Mountain Rag is stunning. I have a few DVDs, one live, and one instructional, and both are great, and I have some material on a Kicking Mule album, but that's it. I really ought to dig deeper, I think.
