Keith, You've mentioned that capo trick before. Do you just play the GDAD chords that use the open top D string course when you do this? As soon as you fret the first string you need to be playing GDAE chord shapes for it to work relative to the other three courses and then be careful not to play any GDAE chords with the open first course of strings. That would confuse me even more I think. Good point Dave - When I use the "pretend" GDAD I tend to just use a lmited vocabulary of two finger shapes on the lower strings with the top course as drone/suspension (or not played), plus "normal" GDAE shapes. If the latter have an open top course then, being D notes, it often sounds fine, or even great, anyway when playing in G or D, which is all I ever do. Hope that makes sense! Keith

Thanks for the explanation - that makes sense.

as I recall, it had octave strings which I've decided I don't want ... I'm a unison pairs man, myself; Celtic Tigger has convinced me of that
(Waits for Scanbran to jump in and tell me I'm mistaken) You're quite right in that it had octave strings, but I do believe you are allowed to change them if you wish ;D Anyway, it sounded just fine the way it was for me, but I should have tried unison strings too. Love the look of Celtic Tigger - it's just so cute.

Welcome back, young 'un You're quite right in that it had octave strings, but I do believe you are allowed to change them if you wish ;D Well, I'm sure you can, but would a top that's been braced for octaves take unisons? I've no idea how much extra tension it would add... (Besides, you'd have to widen the relevant nut slots and other technical stuff like that - beyond my pay grade, that )

Not sure about the tension thing, but I reckon it would be fine - might need to do some truss-rod-footer-aboutery right enough. Nut slots? Pah! Easy. Just file 'em wider

I've no idea how much extra tension it would add... (Besides, you'd have to widen the relevant nut slots and other technical stuff like that - beyond my pay grade, that ) Fylde Octavius sounds good with unison pairs - no problem with tension. From Roger's website_ "Octave strung - 10/10;16/16;10/28;24/48 Unison strung - 10/10;16/16;26/26;46/46" And, being zero fretted, the "nut" slot width adjustment is quick and simple if necessary, and tolerant of any inadvertant deepening of the slot. Mine is octave strung as I like the light strummy sound, but have reversed the octave pairs to reduce their prominence and to make downstroke tune playing sound more natural when crossing from the octave pairs to the unison ones. No adjustment necessary as the previous owner had it with unison pairs. In fact I might revert to that at next string change as I no longer have a unison strung octave mandolin and do miss some of the "grunt". Keith

It's not often that I play 'in public' ... indeed, it's very rare indeed, but this last weekend I was at a youth event and I got a phone call a couple of days before that the worship band had pulled out and would I bring my guitar... well, I did, but I also got Dave's permission to take Tigger just for something different. I always try and meld into the background (kind of difficult when you're my size) but this was doubly important as it was a youth event and I wanted the other members of the 'scratch band' to be more prominent. I managed to hide myself in a corner but the photographer still managed to get this picture - Celtic Tigger was a real hit and certainly added a different something to some of the songs that were played - none of which I had ever played before (hence the copious notes in front of me!)

Leo, That's just so cool. It's great to see one of my instruments doing what they are meant to - making music. I bet that you had a great time

Dave tells me that she is a 'he', I wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea: it's all very platonic but aye, we're having a a grand time together although ... Doubly so as my living room is being redecorated so my other instruments (apart from Suki) are currently stored under the stairs so CT and Suki are the only instruments to which I have access at the moment (and it has been thus for over a week now - and he's only just finished prepping the walls, first lick of paint goes on tomorrow...
