After seeing Leo's neat old guitar strap on Naomi at HB4, I re-started my quest to find the perfect leather strap, the one that will grow old with me along with my Martin. I've bought several handmade straps over the years which were nice, but weren't quite nice enough to be "the one". Last week I ordered a "Bear" strap, handmade by Rupert Breeden. He made it especially for me, so I was able to specify the length and also ask for just one hole on each end rather than the typical three adjustment holes. I bought the "5.5 Plain", opting for no hardware as I want to leave it on the guitar all the time, including while it's in the case. My strap arrived two days after I ordered it. I suspect that when it gets closer to Xmas he will be very busy, but I was amazed by his speedy service. The strap is beautiful. The quality of the leather is amazing, thick and supple. I worked in a saddle shop for years and am pretty picky about my leather... this one is in a different class from the other handmade straps I have ordered. It will take a bit of breaking in, but I would expect that from any quality leather strap. It's a lovely rich brown conker colour. All this for £29, including recorded shipping. Rupert was very quick to respond to my emails and seems an all-around lovely chap. I'm so impressed with the strap that I've now ordered another to go on the Takamine. I will eventually get one for the Gibson, too. My strap hunt is over. If you are looking for a great handmade leather strap at a really good price, I can highly recommend Bear Straps. This is the one I ordered: Plain StrapHere is the home page: Bear Straps

Haven't come across those before but they do look nice. Seem to be made in UK somewhere do you know where? I have a few Italia straps which are very comfortable and I think will last me a lifetime. I was looking for a cradle-style strap for my tenor banjo recently, couldn't decide which one to buy so as a temporary measure made my own out of some offcuts of leather from when we re-upholstered the dining chairs recently. Here's a photo of the finished article, pretty stylish eh? I don't think it will last long, the upholstery leather is quite thin and the cradle-style attachment means it's going to rub against the tension hooks. It'll do for now though.

The straps are hand-made by one guy, Rupert Breeden, which made me even happier to buy from him. He makes them here in the UK. Those straps are really nice looking Mike! I was after something plainer and thicker. I can't praise Bear straps enough.

And you have got to like a guy named Rupert who calls his company "Bear".

Encouraged by Ms Wild Violet, I have also indulged myself and have bought 2 straps from Mr Breeden. He gave me discount for ordering 2 at once and throughout the process of order to delivery (2 days!) kept me informed in chatty and pleasant emails. So a big thumbs up from me for Bear straps, too. Thanks for the recommendation, Lynn.

Excellent stuff! Two superb recommendations there - might have a gander to see if he does anything that might suit a mandolin or banjer...

My second one arrived even quicker than the first. Getting one for the Gibson, too. Definitely a lifetime strap. I couldn't be happier!

Rupert's just emailed me to say that mine is on its way, too What a nice bloke to deal with - genuinely helpful in making sure I got exactly what I wanted. Of course, I don't actually have Molly yet, but it's always best to be prepared

I have ordered my J50 strap, even though it will be quite a while before the neck gets reset. It should be here today. The other straps are in use on the Martin and Takamine and I love them. I've never been excited about a strap before, but these are fantastic. Now, should I order one for my sometime-in-the-distant-future J45....?

The strap for my (on the way) Defaoite guitar-bouzouki arrived today. (actually, it arrived yesterday but I didn't get to the door in time before the card was dropped and the post van left!) Very nice it is, too. I opted for a slightly thinner strap with a shoulder pad in a lovely deep chestnut brown ... Rupert at Bearstraps was a pleasure to order from.
