Be warned, there's no turning back minorkey , there's no turning back now. Shame that you missed out on the slide workshops I ran a few weeks ago. Then again, I might have put you off completely. I also post in a Facebook slide guitar group now and then. Still got a long way to go but I'm getting there. Just need to win the lottery and get a silver dobro

Great stuff. I particularly enjoyed Rattlesnake Blues, like some kind of musical chaos that could almost be a soundtrack to to some of the weird 'Lockdown Dreams' I keep having. I would never have have found this myself so really appreciate the links. Thanks.

Ernie Payne - no rushing up and down the fretboard just beautiful simplicity. How could I have forgotten about this?

In the "close to the original" camp - enjoyed this.

Thinking of converting one of my guitars for slide. Raising the nut, saddle etc.

Larry, well worth watching the video right at the beginning of this thread - Martin talks about this very thing, and makes the excellent point that if you raise the bridge you'll get what you're seeking so far as raising the action, but if you raise the nut as well you're essentially turning your guitar into a dobro (nothing wrong with that, of course. Jerry Douglas is one of my favourite musicians, full stop) as the action will be high all the way down the neck. Then you won't really be able to still fret strings - which of course we really will still want to do when playing slide guitar.

Hmm I thought about this when watching a youtube video about playing slide. The poster said that the action can be quite high because you don't need to fret the strings. But that's not right, because the best slide players also fret the strings occasionally.

But that's not right, because the best slide players also fret the strings occasionally. This is correct. Generally speaking, if you raise the nut, you will not be able to fret and would need to be playing in a lapslide (Jerry Douglas) style. Getting a bit of extra hight on the bridge will allow you to slide and fret without whacking the neck with the slide all the time. It is not, however, absolutely essential. You could try first with heavier strings (which I would recommend anyway for slide - gives you a bit more bite).

So let's have some Jerry Douglas, with John Hiatt - one of my favourite song-writers.
