Anyone use those metal nut inserts that go over your nuts and raise the strings? I think they're made by a company beginning with S and ending in tewmac (avoiding product placement...)

I use(d) one on a resonator that was set up for "normal" playing. Made a half-decent lap-slide guitar then. Very easy to slip in and out (ooer). i think my son-in-law has that guitar now and it was used for some overdubs on some recordings he and his band did a few years ago - which are still being mixed.....!!!

Was thinking of getting one for my Fender Dread. Would I have to raise the saddle too?

Nope. Just stick the nut raiser in and you're good to go.

Going off on a tangent from a few posts back - I used to have quite a few John Hiatt cassettes. Really liked him and his song-writing. But to my shame I discovered I only have one CD - Beneath a Gruff Exterior. So I popped this in the car and have been playing it to death. Some great songs and the slide playing throughout is stellar. I finally remembered to look at who the player is - turns out to be Sonny Landreth. So that explains it!
I've been working on my slide a little this week. I don't know why I haven't played more over the years. We've always had a few George Thorogood style numbers in the set, but considering my all time favourite players and solos all tend to be slide solos I don't know why I haven't focussed on it more myself. Anyway, I'm just using my old dreadnaught, haven't raised the action or anything, but I have ordered some heavier strings. Will let you know what happens...

And of course he had Ry Cooder working with him in Little Village.

Nope. Just stick the nut raiser in and you're good to go. Keith Keith, someone in a Facebook slide group told me its for playing lap steel guitar, not conventional slide guitar ...

Current challenge is to get that lovely right hand percussion a la Harry Manx. It's a whole new skill...

Keith Keith, someone in a Facebook slide group told me its for playing lap steel guitar, not conventional slide guitar ... ... yes, the nut raiser renders fretting impossible - I said so in a previous post up this page when with the nut raiser in my resonator "made a half decent lap slide guitar then." You could I suppose still hold the guitar the normal way but you woould still be unable to fret. Keith

By the way I watched Martin's video earlier, and found myself playing along in parts, even though I was in standard tuning. Good stuff!

There have been slide players who habitually use standard. Lowell George is the one who stands out, but i understand that Phil Beer of Show Of Hands does too.
Once you realise that strings 1, 2 and 3 give a minor chord (E) in standard, and strings 2, 3 and 4 give a major chord (G) it all makes much more sense.
