To all you players posting videos with good audio, are you using cameras that take external microphones? I've got a project in mind to use my iPhone 6 Plus with an Alesis iO dock that I got for my iPad 3, but I'm not sure whether the native video app on the phone will recognise the mic inputs on the Alesis. Any other ideas on getting condenser mics into an iPhone 6 Plus?

Anything i- is a mystery to me I'm afraid Cams, but I'm sure there'll be someone here who can help!
I use either webcam or digital camera on video setting for the picture, but also record the audio simultaneously but separately into Cakewalk via Zoom H2 as USB mike. Then I stick the two together with Windows Moviemaker. All a bit primitive, but it works well enough for me, especially for the audio!

I use (seldom enough) the notebook camera and an H4n recorder as audio interface.

Laptop webcam with H4n plugged into the USB for me too. Not sure if I meet all the criteria ("players posting video with good audio" ) but it keeps everything simple enough for me. Welcome to the forum Cams, I learned a lot from the Celtic Guitar Forum when I started exploring that genre a few years ago.

Anything I do video, I use the camera mics, be it on my dedicated video camera or my Canon digital camera. Very basic, but adequate for Youtube.

Just entering into this area myself, but I have found that the distance the camera needs to be from the guitar is unsuitable for the microphone placement. The cameras which accept external microphones are out of my price range, and most video cameras have built in compression software which does strange things to delicate audio.
My best results have come from using a separate device to record audio (either a microphone into a computer/tablet or something like one of the Zoom portable recorders) and the video camera placed appropriately for the best picture, usually much further away.
Bring your hands up in front of you and clap twice once you have both audio and video devices rolling, then play your piece.
On a PC it's easy to synch the separate audio with the video using the waveform spikes from the hand claps. The visuals of the hand movements help, too. Then delete the camera audio and trim the start and end of the movie clip. Free software like Moviemaker will let you do this, although there are more sophisticated programs available which are easy to use.
Macs and Apple tablets/phones can do the same thing. There are IO apps built specifically to do this on iPads and iPhones.
The advantage of doing it this way is that you can run the audio track through your normal processes to change volume levels, add reverb etc before you sync, as long as you don't trim the hand claps until after you've glued the video and audio together.
It takes longer to describe than to do.

Thanks all for your replies. I've ordered a 30-pin to lightning adapter (£40 shipped and I grudge it for a bloomin' cable. Mutter, mutter) and will report back when I know whether the setup is gonna work for me. If so, I hope to start getting some videos up. Nothing like a bit of pressure to get one's chops up!

The lightning adapter cable came yesterday and it works! I had half an hour to experiment yesterday with a single omni condenser mic. Audio comes in over only one channel and the headphone socket on iPhone or Alesis dock don't work for monitoring. I've downloaded a new app called MoviePro which apparently gives more options with audio and video than the native app, so I'll test that out tonight and try with the same mic and also with two cardiod condensers.
The most difficult thing to deal with is gonna be the short length of the lightning adapter cable -- 0.2m. It makes it difficult to set up the Joby Gorilla Pod stand for the iPhone. The other difficult thing is going to be to find a place with good light and no background noise (kids, dogs, etc!)
I'll write it up with pictures when I get something that works.

For the lighting, try looking for 'softbox' or 'umbrella' lighting on places like ebay. There are lots of cheap setups designed specifically for home video making: I suspect they have become popular for those who want to put cooking and makeup tutorials and the like on YouTube.
My setup cost $A50 delivered for two stands, lights and umbrella shades. Each stand can hoist a light over two metres high, but each breaks down into a package just over 600mm long and less bulky than a typical camera tripod, so they're not a big deal to store. The lights are those low powered twisty energy saving globes which put out the equivalent of 200W incandescent bulbs. With everything turned on it's like sitting in bright sunlight, so the camera likes it.

Thanks Kym,
I've actually got a lightstand and an umbrella for my Nikon speedlight, so it's just a light I need really. The big problem I have is finding enough space in the house to record! I have to do it in the bedroom because we have three kids and dogs and not a big house! I'm having fun getting the rig set up though. I had most of the gear already; the only thing I had to buy was the ridiculously expensive and short Apple lightning cable and and I've just ordered a lightning cable extension because the Apple one is too short. But those cables have cost me more than your whole lighting rig!

Thanks guys. I'm having fun with this. I'd forgotten about how the red light makes you mess up your tunes!
Here's the rig...

..... the red light makes you mess up your tunes! ................. It certainly scares me silly, especially when video involved. Somehow I can stay relatively calm with just audio even if it isn't going well. Keith
