Got my copy of the above CD in the post this morning from stringdriventhing and have given it a quick listen... a more studied listen to come over the next few days.
So, like Wild Violet's CD yesterday, I can only give first impressions.
It's great packaging! (that's not damning it with faint praise; it was the first thing I noticed!). It comes in a 'bookfold' CD case with a plastic insert to hold the disc. This has the benefit of giving space for some sleeve notes - which are basically just the landlord saying thank you to everyone involved. Interestingly, nowhere is the actual location of 'Captain's' given - which maybe says much about the intended audience for this CD (or is maybe a missed trick!)
There are 10 tracks in total - each one by a different artist or band and all really different. There are modern tunes with a full band ("Take Me Back To Liverpool" by Gallus Crows - Gordon's band) and traditional unaccompanied songs ("Ae Fond Kiss" sung by Elizabeth Merritt - and a cracking version of "I Will Go" by Neil Thomson with only a bodhran as accompaniment). The running list nicely mixes up traditional and modern, male and female vocalists, unaccompanied and full band so every song is significantly different from the last.
There is a decidedly Scottish flavour to the offerings - and that's to be expected, really. It really does sound like a pub session - albeit one at which the clientele are surprisingly respectful to the performers! The production values seem high enough - every song is clear and free of extraneous clicks and burps (is that what is meant by 'production values'? I've really no idea but other reviewers seem to think it's important so I thought I'd just throw it in there...)
The 'welcome to The Captain's Bar' and 'Last orders, please' are a bit gimmicky but, if you're listening to the CD as a complete work (rather than on shuffle on you iPod or whatever) it gives credence to the 'pub session' atmosphere.
I can see it becoming a favourite play on my iPod thingummyjig so thanks to Stringy for my copy
