I set the H2N to record, closed all the around the house and just waited for 5 minutes. I was amazed at what the H2N recorded. Faint voices upstairs that I couldn't hear, creaks, wind, ticking clocks in other rooms etc. All very quiet but there none the less. Maybe you have a ghost Seriously, it really is amazing what a microphone can pick up. Creaks from pvc windows, central heating pipes moving, pc fan, traffic, aircraft. Summer's even worse with lawnmowers and hedge trimmers.

I almost considered recording a version of Je t'aime.

My Zoom H6 often picks up what sounds like my neighbour playing a pipe organ. Wait, that is my neighbour playing a pipe organ (or expensive electric replica). A very odd thing to hear.

I can imagine the journey of discovery the Beatles must have had when they started to take control in the studio (the Beatles and other bands that is)... My own journey started and almost ended within 5 minutes after I'd listened to myself playing Timing all over the shop, fret buzz, fingering issues (and that's just pressing the record button )

We are our own worst (and best) critics Iain

In DADGAD I hope? (I remember the poster for the Dan's first tour here - severely curtailed as it turned out, but not before a much younger version of myself saw them play a blistering set at the Palace Theatre in Manchester - it read, "Steely Dan slips into the UK"...)

My neighbour is a trained organist and wonderful all round musician. He inherited some money a few years ago and bought a Dutch constructed organ. This looks like a pipe organ from the time of Bach. All based around some very clever and sophisticated samples. He does organ recitals in his front room!

On balance though it is a great learning tool; you just have to do it regularly enough to get used to you own fingers and so on. And as for getting used to your voice !!!!!

I've started feminising my finger nails which is a hard enough habit to acquire. I have better ears for playback than for play through and I suspect this is a common problem for many. I've thought for a long time that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who play musical instruments and musicians. I count myself as one of the former. I'm quite happy about it and quite happy to plod on trying to get better and enjoy the process of doing so. Recording myself will hopefully make me better. In the words of that (I think quite famous) fella from the 60's 'it couldn't get much worse'.

You just have to be determined to hold on to your sanity! I was going to record a couple of songs today but somehow found something else to do! Sometime over the weekend!

and now me finger nail has broken (bang goes my 'shake')...having seen Leo's recent post bravely outing himself as a 'flesher', I feel able to carry on recording until the little blighter can take and damn good filing again I was just starting to get some 'feel' into how to play into the mic and it's all gone to pot. It's amazing how the slightest thing can affect a recording.

It's Phil Taylor who's the flesher - I use nails if they're there (just don't bother too much if they're not!)
