Interesting demonstration of how an acoustic guitar sounds through different microphones. Neumann mics are superb but very very expensive for home use, although you can hire them.
Had to smile at the size of the room they were recording in. It was massive, perfect for eliminating unwanted reflections and booming bass frequencies but hardly typical of a home studio.

Have to agree with Lavaman. Interesting video, although the microphone comparison I didn't find particularly impressive (all pretty good except for the vocal mic, but what would you expect for microphones of that price), and for solo guitar recording you'd always want stereo, if not even more microphones.
But I'd really, really like that room to record in.

I'd like to live in that room!
Lucky the presenter was there to explain how the guitar sounded with each microphone, as I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference otherwise.

Interesting series of videos indeed Leo! I can see why they would use a room like that to make their microphones sound as good as possible, but as has been said already it's rather far removed from a typical "home" studio! I'm glad they had that section at the end on the microphone comparison video but I feel that should have come first. Then we could be told what the presenter thought rather than him telling us what we're supposed to hear and talking all over the sounds. For me the comparison confirmed my positive view of the small diaphragm option - nearly always more natural sounding to my tired old ears. The second video in the series about microphone positions was also interesting. He said how directional cardioid microphones were and then went on to say how you have to experiment with where to point the microphone as the sound is so different from different parts of the soundboard and the guitar. Which left me wondering why no Omni microphone came into the discussion? Rich Tozell in Premier Guitar puts the case for Omni better than I could - Premier Guitar - Omni Microphones. I'd agree with so much of that article. It's a shame that there is nothing recorded /videod in that session in the same environment using dual microphones. I'm sure that would tell us something too. However at near 4 times the price of my Avantones I think that KM184 small condenser will need to wait till I'm at least 4 times as good on guitar! Mark
