Some time ago James Daubney borrowed a little Caucasian Spruce/Cypress FE19, that I made for Dave some years ago, for a gig so I offered to make James a classical and he jumped at the chance. He paid me a visit and played a couple of my guitars, nice to hear them being used again, and we settled on a European Spruce/Madagascan Rosewood Torres FE19, but with a few little twists. The guitar will have a bolt on neck rather than the more usual Spanish Heel with the sides let into the neck, I'm also going to fit a K&K classical pickup. (At this point a herd of classical builders are throwing themselves of Beachy Head!) Anyway, James went off with my own tornavoz FE19 'La Lena' to used until his guitar was finished, and the game was afoot.
The guitar will be:
Top: European Spruce (Bavarian) B&S: Madagascan Rosewood Neck: Cedrella with Mahogany heel FB: Macassar Ebony Bridge: BRW Bindings: Macassar ebony
Here's the wood:
The top and B&S were sandied to joining thickness of about 3.5mm and the sides thinned to 2mm.
This top is from Bavaria and was cut in 2004, it is one of the top three soundboards I have handled and I have been saving it for a special project.
Now this is what you call quarter sawn, stunning.

You've had me on tenterhooks waiting for this one and the new competition build since early November when, I believe, you said you'd be making a start "in the New Year". Been hibernating? I was even wondering if you'd decided against sharing the builds with us so it's great to see them off and running.

Hibernating, no, I've been getting on with the rest of my life, you know, the important stuff. p]

The edges of the plates were jointed, and they were glued together using Hot Hide Glue and the tent method.

I keep coming upon different methods that different makers have for what appears (to the uninitiated) to be the simple process of sticking two pieces of wood together edge to edge. Nice to see a simple old method that still works fine.

Sides were bent in my bender, another step done that now I can't cock -up! Actually Mad rose when quartersawn can split along the grain but I managed to get them out whole, so success! Colin

The head block and tail block were made and both they and the linings glued in with fish glue. Then a bit of rock and rolling with the radius dishes and we have the rims done. Colin
