Zoom H2 is fab Martin! I love mine. Quick and simple to use, and works great as USB mike too, which is how I use it mostly now. Have fun. Getting anywhere with log in elsewhere Lynn? Keith Keith, if you get a minute, I'd be grateful to hear about the details of your setup using the H2 as a USB mic. Laziness on my part combined with consigning the huge user manual to the box and struggling to see the tiny screen has made me want to simplify what I'm doing.

The screen is certainly ridiculous!
I use the lead that came with my H2 to connect it to my PC. The H2 then powers up, and I think there's only two screens of either/or options to click through and you're ready to go. Record level can be increased/decreased using the buttons either side of the central one. I always use my H2 with the gain slider switch on the side in the middle/medium position. The output from the H2 is recognised by my ancient Cakewalk recording software, so I'm sure it would work into almost any other software too - what will you be using Martin?

Thanks Keith. I haven't a clue what software to use, but I reckon doing it via the PC will be a bit easier on the eyes (and fingers). I know there was a link to that 'Reaper' software on the main forum a while back - might give that a go. Free is always the best type, right enough...might do some research!

Yes, I had a go with Reaper - it is indeed free, though they do expect you to purchase after a while. There's no compulsion to do so if you claim to be "still evaluating". I found it quite complicated to use and gave up after a few goes! Maybe Audacity, genuinely free, might be worth a go though. There's probably other free packages if you Google around a bit.
Must confess I've never tried the Sony stuff I won from the Mag a while back - it looks hugely complicated, but it will import vids and mp3 and can edit them, so one day I'll force myself as Windows Movie Maker is so clunky.

Hmm....I was hugely impressed with the sound quality when I recorded onto the memory card and listened back to it from the H2 on my headphones, but I've just tried it as a USB mic into Audacity!
Ugh!
I must be doing something wrong.
Hissing, muffled, quiet sound, dreadful tone - it's awful. How strange that the same mic can produce such different results on the PC compared to directly onto the SD card...

Hm. Not good. Is there somewhere in Audacity to specify the sound source which is being recorded? When using Cakewalk, my PC defaults to my rubbish webcam mike even when H2 plugged in, unless I switch to the H2 when in Cakewalk. Could a similar thing be happening with your Audacity?

I've messed around with the settings until I got fed up and downloaded Reaper to try.
Apart from mind-boggling complexity, once I got to record a track it's night and day. Crystal clear sound just like I expected.
Must be a setting in Audacity that I can't work out. Now I need to try to figger out how to work Reaper properly. Seems much to complex for what I want sadly, but the sound might be worth it...

Sounds good to me Martin - certainly agree that Reaper is rather complicated - glad you have got some good sounds. I never got the hang of any editing with it other than trimming start and finish, then exporting as wav file. I seem to remember messing with some reverb, but didn't get the hang of reducing enough to sound natural rather than all wibbly wobbly. Seems to have great potential if you stick at it though - looking forward to hearing the results of your efforts - steep learning curve ahead! Keith

This thread reinforces my desire for there to be a 'how to record more proper than what I do now' workshop at #4

Nowt to do with this thread - but I can't work out how to start a new topic (not that this is a new topic, mind)...
How do I change my profile? I can't work out how to get a picture instead if that shadowy outline you get by default...

Well, Leo, it's very technical, but basically you click on the New Thread thingy near the top right of the screen . Well that's what I do... To change your profile, click the Profile thingy, then Modify Profile, and then you get the option to choose an avatar or link to a photo/piccy of your own. Let me know if you're still having problems and I can have a look at your settings EDIT: I've given you a temporary avatar Leo, just to test it was working okay, but please feel free to change it at your leisure (or tell me to do it!)

It sounds like it needs some balancing between the mic. level Properties in the Windows Sound panel and the ones in Audacity. Given that the source and the computer's sound hardware are the same there's no reason the results shouldn't be at least as good as Reaper's and involve far fewer, "Why the fruitcakes do the awkward twohats do it that way?" moments. That said, regular Reaper users would probably find Audacity equally obnoxious.
