I really liked the "Treebeard" baritone guitar that I made for jwdaubney last year - so much so that I want one of my own: The slight problem is that there's no room at the De Faoite Inn and I already have the "Treebeard" I made back in 2004. The solution - just like Dr Who why not "regenerate" my "Treebeard" I've done these regenerations before and they work well, so I'm re-using the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides of the guitar and building the rest "as new". The regenerated "Treebeard" will be a multi-scale instrument with a bass scale length of 735mm and a treble scale length of 720mm rather than the fixed 735mm scale length of the original, it will have a Florentine cutaway, Manzer style wedge, a new European Spruce top and mahogany neck and Macassar Ebony "trimmings". The new "Treebeard" will go with me to the Halsway Manor guitar weekend in July together with another "surprise" instrument. Here's the original "Treebeard" - the fifth guitar I made: Here are the new plans: The first task is to "dematerialise" the old instrument very carefully - the photographs of this process were a little weird as the camera seemed to detect the disturbance in the time vortex inside the Tardis (aka "The Shed") as my buttocks clenched The old neck has been removed - the fingerboard and carbon fibre rods will be "recycled" - and the back carefully separated from the rim by routing off the bindings and cutting through the kerfed lining with a Japanese saw: The top has been removed and the old linings carefully removed from the sides: The sides are removed from the tail and neck block, cleaned up and then re-bent in the Fox-style bender using a heating blanket: Here are the bent sides are in the mould:

Did you write any music on the original Treebeard Dave? If so, I suppose it's now decomposing...

Exciting! Will look forward to Halsway even more now!
And what is the surprise instrument then?
(..don't suppose you'll fall for that unsubtle attempt at finding out...)

Thought you'd gone a bit quiet. I was wondering if you'd cut another tree down... or have I stumbled upon the surprise instrument??

Lovely. I bet it was fantastic smelling the BRW as you worked with it - but nerve wracking. How lucky you are to have such a good quality set (from here the grain looks quite straight!)!

Sam - yes, it's a nice boring straight grained set of Rio Rosewood The Sapele neck block is drilled for the bolt holes: Next the holes for the 6mm carbon fibre flying buttress rods are drilled: The slot for the fingerboard extension support is cut and the fingerboard support is then fitted and glued in using hot hide glue: The cutaway section from the treble side is cut off and re-bent on the hot pipe. The Sapele cutaway support block is shaped to match the sides and two Macasser Ebony binding strips together with b/w/b purfling strips glued on. The cutaway side piece is then glued onto the support block with fish glue: The treble side is then glued on to the cutaway support block with fish glue:

The Macassar ebony end graft is glued to the lime tailblock using hot hide glue: The treble side is glued onto the tail block with a b/w/b purfling trip in between the side and the end graft using hot hide glue: Two Macasser Ebony binding strips are glued on to the neck block. The cutaway side piece is then glued onto the neck block together with a b/w/b purfing strip: The bass side is glued to the tail-block with a b/w/b purfling trip in between the side and the end graft using hot hide glue: An extra piece of Brazilian Rosewood is then glued onto the head block to meet up with the treble cutaway side: The bass side is glued onto the neck block using hot hide glue: Here’s the rim-set in the mould:

Have you been doing this overnight?! I must adopt your technique of gluing all the decoration on the end-block right from the start - I know it makes sense. Unfortunately, the other end of things wouldn't work for me. Nice work as ever and a very interesting variation on the normal build thread. Thanks for sharing it.
