In my thread about regenerating "Treebeard" I alluded to a "secret instrument" I will be taking to the Halsway Manor Guitar Weekend tomorrow. We'll I'm not great at keeping secrets but I've managed it up until the day before The "secret instrument" is "Ceol Binn Mór Deich Teada" - a five course 530mm scale length octave mandolin - made using Lawson’s Cypress from a tree that grew in my front garden for the top, back, sides, neck, linings and bracing with Macassar Ebony for the fingerboard, bindings, end graft, heelcap, headplates and bridge. Purflings are rope with black/ pear/ black and the Tuners are Rubners with ebony buttons. I'm rather pleased with it: Here's a recording I made in FCFCF tuning of "An Chúil Daigh Ré/The Granemore Hare" - "An Chúil Daigh Ré" means "Dark Moon Hollow" in Gaelic and this is based on the Gloaming's version and "The Granemore Hare" is based on Martin Simpson's version. Recorded with my Zoom H4n with no added EQ or effects: "An Chúil Daigh Ré/The Granemore Hare"

Looks and sounds a delight, Dave - looking forward to having a go at the weekend, though I expect there'll be quite a queue!
Noticed the endpin jack - K&K in it?

Thanks Bernd and Francis. It sounds great to me though I'm still getting used to playing it without too many rattles and buzzes. Keith - yes it has a "salvaged" K&K in it that had some issues and I thought would be OK but it isn't working and I'll order another when I get back from Halsway Manor and fit that. It sounded great for the few seconds the K&K did work though

This is beautiful, Dave. The cypress looks lovely. It sounds great even through the speakers on my tablet. FCFCF isn't a tuning I've used, but it sounds really nice here.

Oh my, that's a beauty.
I do enjoy the fullsome sound of the extra course of strings. Lovely top, as well. I have always been a fan of grain feature on softwoods. The potential is there, in the sound. It would be good to hear a sound clip in the future when she's opened up a bit more.

Thanks Shubs, mandovark, Sam and earthbalm. Rob - Thanks. No other trees in the garden were harmed in the making of "Ceol Binn Mór Deich Teada" Leo - Pretty please noted and yes it will be at Halifax.
