My lad has found a really pretty and quiet ancient parlour guitar which is built from rather excellent timber unfortunately the dovetail joint is broken and the heel split and cracked. I'm contemplating grafting a new heel onto the neck and filling the dovetail socket and using a bolt on connection. Any thoughts?

As your not trying to 'reconstruct to original' the bolt-on neck joint should be just as good as a dovetail. I've built using both types and would say there is no difference. Advantages of the bolt-on are for making adjustments. From the sound of the damage you need to work on the bolt-on would be my preference in this instance. Good luck with the rebuild.
