Those of you who read that other guitar forum will probably have heard of the Tonedexter by now, a digital box of wonders which is 'trained' with a microphone but which is then able to modify the sound of your pickup to match. The modified sound is the available to you at a gig with no need for a microphone at all! I guess a lot o these digital wonders are going to come forward now the technology is so advanced — think of those harmony generators as well.
Doug Young has just produced a You Tube demo of the Tonedexter and the training process which is interesting. These are not available over here yet and supply is limited in the USA. I'm wondering which UK guitar player will use these first!

This sounds like it could be very useful in avoiding that horrible quack that seems to occur in a lot of live acoustic sounds, assuming the artist 'trains' the microphone sound properly in advance. Very interesting stuff

Very interesting stuff Yep, we are now at the stage where digital technology is doing some useful things. This sounds one of the most realistic processors I have heard so far. Bet there is a long waiting list! I read somewhere that Peter Frampton has just completed a tour where all of his acoustics had been trained in this way using different mics and different rooms to bring out the characteristics of each individual guitar. That all sounds a bit complicated to me! SaveSave

Sounds good, but how much? I have a feeling the market may be flooded with second hand pre-amps next year.

I've had some guitar pickups that I think only a hammer could improve. But this is a clever piece of kit by all accounts. Interesting. As I have no piezo only pickups in my collection at least I can anticipate eventually hearing about the high price with relative peace of mind! Ahh - just noticed the link by Andy above. $399 in the USA, so will be at least £1 for every $1 I assume ... or maybe worse, the way currency is moving. Ouch! Mark

Looking at the website they do ship to Europe at these pieces plus postage. They seem to be in short supply though.

I have an instrument where I have an unsatisfactory sounding undersaddle (and can't change it easily due to bracing restricting other choices) and have just invested in a Fishman Aura 16. As far as I can see, the system works in a similar way, and I know you can make your own images. Possibly better news for other people - Fishman have an offer on where you can unlock the basic Aura pedals to work like a full Aura 16 for $29- I've seen a used pedal this week for about £60 (less than I paid!)
If it doesn't work then this looks tempting (but expensive!).

It sounds good but I worry that it would unleash the 'tweaker' in me - I think I'd constantly be thinking 'did i train it well enough? I'll just try it again...' and then be thinking 'does it sound as good as last time?'
Personally I'm very happy with my LR Baggs Anthem and Orchid preamp setup - It's simple, quick to setup and sounds good - it doesn't sound 'exactly' like my guitar but it sounds good in it's own right which I'm happy with!

Hello all, I read this before I took the plunge and bought a ToneDexter - thanks! I’ve now written a long review here on the reviews section. Hopeit casts more light on the subject! Gavdav, yes, it’s a similar concept to the Aura but I feel it goes many steps further - take a look at the review. All the best Alistair Russell, acousticsoundboard.co.uk/thread/9684/tonedexter-preamp-di-acoustic-guitar
