Partially inspired by some of the discussion here I am going to be producing a few posts on home recording and live electronics. My aim is not to dazzle people with science but to help those experimenting for the first time appreciate that they don't need to spend a fortune b ut that they may need to take into account a number of challenges to getting decent sound — it's not all about expensive mics. I will host this stuff on my blog and will reference suff here, this is mainly because I aim to create a lot of the content in Podcast format — mind you the direct links to audio files will be here! As ever, I welcome other contributions. You all have a lot of experience to share — I could well end up learning a lot myself. Good lad Andy - granted I have spent next to nothing but I'm never really happy with my recorded sound and will at some time in the future will be looking to improve it. Having said that my concern is how much is tone production by the player and how much is poor equipment? I guess experimentation is the key. Look forward to reading your information Regards Phil

Fantastic, Andy.... I've got a Zoom H2 and have recently got hold of a Tascam DP-004 - both of which confuse the heck out of me! I love the idea of multi-tracking (hence the Tascam) but, whilst I like to think if myself as tech savvy, I realise that, in this area in particular, I'm an incompetent luddite! Martin has offered to help me with the Tascam but I need to work out how to switch it on first!

No you're not Leo - I find the little and medium sized recorders fiddly for mutitracking too, and much prefer using software on PC where the screen is big enough to see what's going on! Mind you, my software is ancient, and I've used it for about 13 years - it doesn't function fully in Win7, but now it can do the simple things I want to do I daren't move on to a newer package, even though I have one sitting waiting saying "use me, use me." The laterr does, I think, also allow video editing as well, so I suspect one day that will tempt me to try it as Windows Moviemaker isn't v flexible really. Good luck with the Tascam - Martin has had some nice results with his. Keith

Andy www.andyhowell.info/wingandaprayer/home-recording-electronics-series-introduction/This is a great idea and very helpful. I found the first instalment awash with sage advice, and I look forwards to the sequels (you might want to bookmark these on your home page in due course). Top man!
