An Féa Caol has had a couple of days to aclimatise to being in Wales and to being subjected to my uncultured handling so I thought I ought to post a sound sample. I've chosen my own arrangement of the Turlough OCarolan favourite "Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór". It's a single (third) take and recorded with an ageing Audio Technica MB4000C mic which refuses to run on phantom power so has an AA battery installed. I've had to get in close with the mic because it's a little underpowered. I mention this because it hasn't picked up the very sweet presence that An Féa Caol possesses though I hope I've managed to catch some of her sustain. Two files, the same recording (with quite a bit of 'red recording light fever' present) but the second with reverb. The tapping at the end of the files is click track spill, sorry. Without reverbWith reverb

Really nice playing, Earthbalm. It's easy to see that Anthea will enjoy her sojourn in Wales.

Dale, That's a gorgeous arrangement beautifully played . I prefer the raw version - my instruments tend to have their own inbuilt reverb Anthea sounded good to me.

Thanks scorpiodog. There's a few late arriving and fluffed notes in there but at some point you just have to bite the bullet and post. An Féa Caol really does have a sweet and bell like tone. Dale

Sweet, Dale. Really enjoyed that, esp for the original touches here and there. Great sound, and playing. Those who know me will not be surprised when I say I very much preferred the dry track, because it conveyed more of the character of the guitar.
Very lovely job - looking forward to more!
Are they the same strings? If not, what have you got on there now?
Keith

An Féa Caol does have her own built in reverb, so much so that she's inspired me to start on an arrangement of 'Reynadine' with 'held' notes in that Tony McManus way.

Thanks Keith. They are the same strings. No supply work today as many south Wales schools are closed. So, I took a trip to the capital to get a low mic stand (to record An Féa Caol) and some new strings. But I liked the strings you put on so much, even tuned down to CGCGCD. I think I may have to invest in some NewTones.

Twiddly bits. There were definitely twiddly bits... You do, however, need to change your computer keyboard layout from US to UK... seems the eadgb keys have got mixed up with the cgd keys. Damn yankees. eh?

Lovely Dale, gorgeous sound and super playing. Personally I like the first recording, without reverb, but both are super! Anthea obviously likes Wales Glyn

Thanks all. Anthea really is a beautiful sounding instrument. Have work for the next few days but shall return to recording on the weekend and shall try to coax the mic and recording set up into capturing the guitar's bell-like timbre (without the reverb ). Dale

lovely Dale, my preference is for the natural version and it is great to hear how each player lends the guitar a subtle 'new' voice.

Sweet tones Dale, and very well played indeed despite your reservations. There does seem to me to be a lot of the guitars qualities showing through on the non reverb recording, and I sympathise with your frustrations at capturing a guitars "real" sound in a recording. That problem is heightened with a guitar that's new to you as different guitars do tend to prefer slightly different recording set ups for best results. I look forward to hearing more, while at the same time thinking that all you guys making recordings in the early part of Anthea's journey are raising the bar damn high for those of us doing our demos later in the journey. Thanks robmc and vikingblues. I'm hoping to adjust the set up at the weekend when I get more time. I have a Samson condenser mic (which was ready to sell this Easter) and cradle and I'm hoping to try them out shortly. I also recorded a couple of very short pieces prior to "Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór". I've linked to them one of the below, purely for reference. It's my take on Martin Simpson's intro and verse for "Fair Annie" (The Bramble Briar version). The recording is a little boomy and pre application of "Fast Fret". File

Si Bheag Si Mhor is a wonderful arrangement Dale, and extremely well played. Love the sound of Terz guitars, especially in alternate tunings. Will give your latest recording a listen very shortly- very much looking forward to it,
Robbie
