Can someone recommend an easy tune to learn on for my classical guitar? I tried Blackbird, didnt get very far. I got Ode to Joy, I can just about manage the first few bars. I'm a terrible guitar player...š

What I think is this: No matter how good anyone is or how long they've been playing people are always looking to improve i.e. everybody wants to get better. So if anyone is giving it the 'aren't I good at the guitar' act, they are kidding themselves and they've forgotten how bad they were when they started. So I would play that tune a lot, a lot, a lot. I would play it slowly until I could get every note clear and try and get your fingers as close up behind the fret wire as you can (this improves the tone). In time it should naturally speed up a bit and start to flow. Get it so that you don't have to think about it and where your fingers go where they need to of their own accord. I thought the tone was good, it just didn't flow - we've all been there, and everyone is there with the piece that they are working on a the moment. That's just my half pence worth. (hark at me giving someone advice)

Youāre not useless, and youāre not terrible; like the rest of us, at any level, at one time or another, youāre just frustrated with the outcomes youāre getting at the minute.
I look at it this way - if I was ever to get any better, Iād become more critical of ever more minor faults in my playing and so probably enjoy it even less.
I like Martinās plan for grinding out the basics, timing and technique of something that will give you pleasure - it doesnāt have to be a masterpiece to make you feel good, but you will feel better with the help of some regimented practice.......now hark at me too.....!

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I decided to have another crack at the delcamp online lessons and went for a very basic tune which everyone knows, but because its played on guitar it requires a certain amount of finger dexterity. So I hope to practice this each day till I can play it without thinking about it.

Sounds to me like the Old McDonald is coming along nicely. I's add my voice to those above to say you're not terrible, and if it;s any consolation no matter how long you've been playing for and how far you've got it's very easy to feel totally unsatisfied with what you play! If you can find tunes that you like and sound nice then it makes the practice and repetition so much easier. I recall with my days of studying classical guitar (many years ago) that it was so much more difficult to practice a piece of music if all it was ever going to sound like was a technical study. Mark

No specific recommendations but this site ( www.free-scores.com/index_uk.php ) is a great resource. Plenty of stuff with notation and tablature and mp3 examples of the arrangement. They also have a difficulty level on some pieces. You just need to find your level. What Iād suggest would be to find a tune that you like and would like to play and learn that. Iām far more motivated to learn something that Iād enjoy playing. Another useful app is Anytune. It allows you to slow down a recording to a more useful speed to play along to.

I think, although nobody is exactly the same as another, (and there is an argument for some being naturally gifted or talented), that it is just practise and more practise. It's taken me 5 years to just about play some of the stuff without mistakes (although put me in front of a few live audience and it all goes t~ts up lol). Good luck matey, keep practising, and keep enjoying the journey !

I recently was introduced to Peter Nuttall compositions- heās one if the few composers that write pretty tunes with beautiful harmonies for beginner and intermediate classical guitarists. After you tire of popular songs you might give one or 2 a try

minorkey You're further ahead than I am! Yes, I might be complicating matters by learning several instruments at once, but right at this moment, you can make your guitar do more than I can. I'm not getting frustrated though, because I insist on it being fun, rather than work. I don't even bother trying to play whole songs yet. Just a few bars, and try to get it as clean as I can. If there's a tricky bit, I'll just play those few notes, as clean as I can, or as fast as I can, or try using different fingers, or keep the notes the same, and vary the rhythm. Bitesize pieces all the way.

You're approaching playing the wrong way round. You will not improve if you are only focused on learning one piece after another... instead, you should concentrate on developing your technique: finger strength, finger-independence, minimal finger movement, tension-free posture and legato (smooth playing) to enable you to play many pieces well. Before you know it, you will be playing pieces well that you thought beyond you.
