I'm still trying to get over the shock of some of the posts... My explanations were accused of trolling. What I don't get is the immediate reaction from the manager that I was some type of criminal, he came over with a security guard and would not entertain a discussion about my situation ( I must have looked very dodgy and threatening with my two children in tow!). AGFers missed the point by a million miles and were disproportionately abusive towards not only my posts but me as a guitarist/tutor.
I had no idea I was so 'English' and so easily misunderstood. Thanks for your support over there Keith.
Anyhows, we're out of the city now and living in a log cabin in a wood, much better for the kids. No Internet though.

If the shop's business model does not normally include rentals, it would be difficult for the manager to agree to this on an ad hoc basis. Plus it looks like you got off on the wrong foot with the cheeky question about the 30-day satisfaction guarantee policy - this may be the wrong economic climate to joke with shopkeepers about that sort of thing!
Did you visit any other guitar shops in Manhattan, am hoping to go there myself later this year would be interested to know any others to check out (or avoid!)
Cheers

Mandolin Brothers is on my list. Already been to Rudy's which is worth looking at, the one next to Time's Square sells acoustics.
Try Guitar Center... besides the 'incident', they check your bag and insist you leave it in an unlocked locker (which I refused to do as why would I leave my camera, laptop and iPad with a complete stranger?). The security guards are pretty scary too.
They had the typical stock of Martins and Taylors.

Mandolin Brothers does look good. Try out some of their prewar Martins, then ask about a 30 day guarantee on one - that would almost be worth getting frogmarched out of the shop for!

as the AGF folks are the rudest people on earth. Balls of steel Jonny! Speaking as one of the 'decent 1%' I hate generalisations.

I'm kind of swaying between what you meant Jonny after reading this whole thread (not the AGF one though, phua)!
Did you want to know if they'd buy the guitar back for after you'd finished abusing it, and what they'd give you? Or, Did you want to know if they'd give you your money back after you'd abused it for a month or two?
I see two very different requests here and would expect two different reactions.
By the way I've never been to the States, I've only met Americans that have the guts to travel!!

Keith, in my crazy way of thinking perhaps I was hoping for a bit of both... more along the lines of them buying the guitar back at a higher price than $50, played-in of course, not abused. However, once the the returns policy was mentioned, he wasn't impressed. Anyway, he lost a sale as perhaps he could have made a better deal on a more expensive guitar or a used one.
Redpick - that AGF General section is scary over there, the Custom section seems much more civilised, but I won't be visiting for a while. I had hoped I'd hear from a moderator about the thread, but not seen anything. Quite an achievement to cause such a furore and to have a thread taken down! I'll tick it off my 'things to do before I die!" list.

I only use the Custom Shop section of the AGF and usually find it to be very civilised. Generally moderators don't seem to be as active as on other forums.

You are very wise Trevor. The mods though were a bit slow on the uptake, the thread was full of unacceptable abuse for half a day at least. All forgotten now. On the upside, my YouTube channel had a lot of hits that day - all publicity is...

When I visited GC, I had to wait for half of an hour to get the stuff I had reserved over the phone. After paying, I had to wait for a long minute or two with a security guard who checked my plastic bag and found an unpaid set of strings... The overly social salesboy had counted the string sets wrong, and I didn't notice the wrong price myself as I am not used to taxes added at the counter & the bill was over 100$ anyway. It seemed like a completely routine thing there. I've never before or after that been in a shop, where the contents of the plastic bag are compared to the receipt after you walk straight from the counter towards the door... But somehow it didn't surprise or annoy me --- it seemed that the only guy who was serious about his job was the guard . Oh, they had also guitars, but apparently no guitar tech...

They too checked my bag as I left the shop.
