Thanks for the suggestions - the Blueridge may be a good fit.

+1. I've got one of the newer Guild Westerly series guitars that are based off of the older GAD series. Couldn't be happier.

Is Harley Benton only available through Thomann? In house brand?

He went for this in the end from Hobgoblin, seems good value, all solid woods and wide nut... sadly not a 12 fretter as stated in the description:
Thanks for your help Jonny

So, Hobgoblin's spec description was not accurate: the guitar is 14 frets, not short scale and not 1 7/8" nut, it is 1 11/16" - so they have refunded... back to square one.

Crafter TA-050AM 43mm nut width. one for sale on ebay starting bid £275 - you'd probably get it for that or pretty close (maybe make an offer? Pretty good bang for buck.
There's also a '95 Washburn D34S (12 fret slothead dread) Solid Spruce top, Mahogany back and sides, Rosewood fretboard. Banjo diamond fretboard inlays. 48mm approx nut width.
on Gumtree for £440. which I think is a reasonable price for what it is - again great bang for buck (i was considering this myself or one of the new Sigms sdr28S's until i decided that I'd just have one built for me)

He went for an Eastman E20M - solid Cedar top and solid Sapele b/s. 44.5mm nut, 63.2cm scale-length. Seems impressive on paper, I'll let you know how it plays later this week. Jonny

The Eastman is quite incredible, lives up to the hype, punching well above its price tag. My student loves it and found playing much easier than on his old Fender dread.
Some say that playing a better guitar doesn't make you a better player, but he found playing the things he once thought impossible were really straightforward - a hammer-on exercise for example, the lightest touch gave a clear sound due to the responsiveness and set-up / comfort of the guitar.
I'm also pretty sure he'll pick it up a lot more as it sounds gorgeous.

Glad you eventually got (hopefully) to journeys end - looks good and sounds good on videos. Good luck to your student! Not so good from Hobgoblin - at least they described it correctly as a guitar. Not unusual for specs to be wrong - in my most recent search i saw that the guitar I ended up getting was frequently described on websites as having a scale length that was actually the guitar length. An easy one to spot at least. Mark
