www.guitarguitar.co.uk/pedals_s_detail.asp?stock=13012112113218&gclid=CLqt7fXXnLwCFQrpwgod6EEA7gI've been thinking of a DI box type thingy for a while and know I won't regret it once I've got one. One guitar has a K&K mini, another an Audio-Technica clip-on mic. Would also like some volume control without moving from my playing position. Shall be used in small venues where people don't generally listen (probably not worth getting one then I suppose) - through a P.A. Looked at Orchid as well and open to any other cheap, but great quality, suggestions. Headway a bit out of my price-range atm sadly. For all those lovers of Adrian Legg, he plays in the vid for Ashdown featured in the link, on a very odd sounding excuse for a guitar (what is it?). Thanks. Jonny

My K&K XLR Pure preamp is something I wouldn't be without, whatever else I'm playing through. Also have an Orchid Electronics preamp which is also good, esp the mute button! Boss 7 band eq pedal works well with K&K minis and gives you eq and vol control though can be a bit hissy if the eq sliders are moved to extremes.
But, if you use two guitars through the PA, why not consider a very small and basic mixer? Both guitars could go through it to the PA, and you can have two different eq set ups and independent control over the vol of either.

Thanks Keith - I'd forgotten about your K and K preamp, good idea. If only the Orchid had some control knobs on it.
What's sort of mixer would you recommend?

There are only 2 questions you need to ask yourself in this scenario:
1. Do I want it? 2. Can I afford it?
If the answer to either is 'probably' then you should definitely get it. Ridiculous thoughts such as 'do I need it?', 'would I use it?' are entirely irrelevant.

Having tried many acoustic preamps over the years [ not including the KK one TBF ] I've ended up with one of these... www.tonebone.com/pzpre.phpSilent in operation...zero hum ,hiss , clicks etc , completely bomb proof and intuitive to use with complete control over your sound. I also own one of these... www.headwaymusicaudio.com/product/edb-1/..which is equally silent but more fiddly to use [smaller , closer together knobs and switches] plus the possible downside of a manual rather than stomp mute control. Both produce musical and untainted acoustic sounds with excellent versatility...

Jonny, I use this mixer in my church set up, and it works well - for guitar, voice, violin and piano - www.amazon.co.uk/Alesis-MultiMix-8-USB-FX/dp/B00404E7VKYou could easily have your two guitars and a voice mic through it with room to spare! Cheaper than any of the guitar only preamps we've mentioned too... Trouble is, you might still like a preamp for guitar tone shaping before going to the mixer.... Keith

I get a lot of use out of my headway eb-1 - very comprehensive. The red eye preamp also sounds very good- much less comprehensive than the headway, but many people like the simplicity. I sometimes think the headway is rather too comprehensive for my needs, and am currently reassessing my live set up anyway (my amp is for sale).

You might have a look at the new EB-1 is you are only using a quarter inch jack plug. I shall be reviewing this — and the new EB-2 (the replacement for the old 1) in the next couple of weeks. The two channel Headway is a bit of a beast but superb when you need to blend a mic and a line from your guitar.

on a very odd sounding excuse for a guitar (what is it?). Thanks. Jonny It's some sort of ergonomic guitar, something like a shoulder or back problem has stopped him playing trad acoustic guitars I think I read somewhere – google should help if you're interested

Thanks for the replies - very helpful - I'll reply properly soon. You thinking of flogging your Headway Robbie? Cheers Jonny Its the older model Jonny, but yeh, if I can get my amp sold and get the AER I want, then I would flog the headway. Let me know if you're interested. Robbie

The older model is still pretty good and could be a bit of a steal — especially if you really can't afford a good acoustic amp like the one Robbie has his eye on!

The older model is still pretty good and could be a bit of a steal — especially if you really can't afford a good acoustic amp like the one Robbie has his eye on! Yeh, its a terrific unit. I really can't imagine how they improved on the sound to be honest, because this is already first class. The EQ is incredibly comprehensive, and its feedback busting duties are exceptionally efficient and precise. Now that I've moved the Tobin on I don't feel the need for the headway as much, as the gain from my k&k equipped guitars is perfectly fine going into my Rivera (with the input setting on active, I still only have the gain set at about 20% !) Jonny if you are really interested in it I'b be looking to recover about £125 from what I invested in it. Its been very gently gigged (at church). Oh, the phantom power on it as well makes it an excellent preamp should you have a condenser microphone as well, Robbie

I'll be testing the new unit out over the next couple of days. Apparently, the circuitry is better! I'm interested in the ability to selectively apply EQ to one channel or another. I think this might be very useful when recording — I'm thinking of natural placement mic EQ couple with some dramatic EQ on the pickup to allow the blending of just bass and top frequencies. One interesting feature of the new top model, that hasn't had much attention, is that you can now apply the notch filter to an individual channel. So, you could use the notch filter to knock out on nasty frequency on one channel and apply the global eq on the other one. Feeback is not generally a problem I have had using the blended signal when playing solo acoustic — you can simply turn down the mic blend in the mix, so it is nice to have the option of using the notch in this way.
