Good to see this getting more mandolin-like! Exciting. A Santa mug is a bit unseasonal though don't you think? Keith

Finally the side bindings and purflings next to the neck are fitted and glued in and the bindings are then scraped and sanded flush in the Troji: The top is then cut for the floating fingerboard - an arty shot just to prove that the sun still exists The observant amongst you (Keith/Brenda) will have noticed that CBT has a deeper body than my other mandolins - 65mm instead of 60mm: The Ebony headstock veneer is glued onto the top of the headstock using fish glue: The Ebony veneer is bent to the shape of the volute and glued on the rear of the headstock using fish glue: The headstock is then cut to shape:

The ebony overlay will be fabulous I reckon What's the reason behind the deeper body Dave - are you after more low end or is it just to see what it's like?

Keith and Martin - thanks. What's the reason behind the deeper body Dave - are you after more low end or is it just to see what it's like? I get bored easily Just out of interest really as this is the first mandolin I've done with a back and side wood more in the Rosewood tonal range (the others were English walnut and Cuban mahogany) so I'm thinking it may be a tad more "reverby" and a little more air volume might be interesting.

She's looking very cool in at least two senses Dave: I always enjoy seeing the cool-toned colouration and purity of of line in your instruments.

A slot for the threaded insert is routed in the heel and then it is glued on to the neck shaft using hot hide glue: The neck-block is routed to correct depth for the neck’s fingerboard extension: Here’s the result. An African Blackwood cap has also been fitted to the front of the neck-block: The neck has had the heel and fingerboard extension cut on the bandsaw and this is then tested for fit on the body at the correct angle and position and so that the heel cheeks fit the sides perfectly. The neck heel is “flossed” until this is achieved:

Then a 15mm hole is drilled in the neck heel for a dowel to stiffen the area and take the threaded insert: The dowel is fitted and glued in with epoxy: Next The position of the threaded insert is marked on the neck, the hole drilled and the insert fitted: Next the fret slots are marked on the ebony fretboard and cut with the fretsaw in this jig: The fretboard is the tapered and the end cut to match the soundhole using the circle cutting jig: A piece of binding is bent to shape on the hot-pipe and then glued to the fingerboard using hot hide glue. The binding is ebony with black/pear/black purfling: When the glue is dry the binding edges are trimmed flush and the rest of the fretboard bindings glued on using fish glue:

Keith and Phil - thanks. The 2mm holes for the white side dot markers are then drilled and the markers pressed in: The tuner holes drilled using this jig: The rebated holes for the tuner inserts are then cut: The Gotoh tuners are checked for fit: Next the fretboard is glued onto the neck using fish glue:
