Tonight I will be taking my Martin. I allow other people to play it. That's what guitars are for. If I take my Brook (which I rarely do) I don't let anybody play it, because I don't care what guitars are for, it's my little baby.

I let people play my Seagull at the session we do. I only let trusted pals play my Martin. Let some guy play my Gretsch a while back. He was pissed and bashed hell out of it, and bled all over it

The jam session here is pretty quiet. Usually only haves the players there so it is quite safe. I mainly only play my faith out because it already has a fair few knocks. Took my lowden out once but I just felt uncomfortable trying to be more aware of not knocking it. But maybe next time I'll take out my lovely pink guitar definitely can see it being a hit

I'm going to a youth event this week (a work thing) where, along with other stuff, I'm leading a 'song-writing' workshop. I'm taking with me: Guild, Moon, 2 x DeFaoite and a Fylde (mixture of guitars and bouzoukis). Apart from when I'm doing the workshops, they'll be in the main hall for anyone to pick up and play. 150 young people (aged 14-22). What can possibly go wrong? I work on the basis that we get far more ...ermm... merry at Halifax and, apart from one unfortunate incident with a Taran, there's not been a problem. Maybe the age of participants this weekend will 'compensate' for the lack of alcohol but I love seeing others play my instruments so consider it worth the risk.

Drinking and playing guitar?? I went to a party once and was asked to bring my guitar. By the time everyone was ready for a singalong I was well oiled. Problem was I was too oiled and couldn't remember how to hold a guitar never mind try and play it. My wife has never let me forget about it especially as when I tried to stand up with guitar I fell backwards and landed on the table where the buffet was. She was not impressed. Luckily most of the guests laughed and I didn't damage my guitar.

You will think you are playing the best gig ever — but you will be the only one thinking that!

Oh yes, the hooliganism and vandalism at HB2....lest we forget That was the last time I've had whiskey by the pint. I'll never forget Rodder's explanation of a certain kind of punch... Now you guys have got me thinking I shouldn't be taking my Martins out. I don't go anywhere really raucous, and I no longer attend open mics which is where the accidents I've witnessed seemed to happen. Staying sober means I can realistically judge the situation and put the guitar away if needs be, though I haven't had to yet.

Usually I take my Moon unless intending to do some of the small amount of DADGAD I perform, then I take the Stanford. Both guitars have some honourably earned 'dings' over the years but they are for playing and so accasional knocks happen. I'm always a little bemused when I see quite an old guitar for sale described as 'Mint' condition, why? I am happy to lend my guitar at sessions/singarounds as most of the people are pretty decent about handling intruments, and in return I have played Martins, Gibsons, Larrivees and a whole load of others. Only had one bad incident when a drunk who was not part of the session demanded use of my Moon. I gave him a firm "No" . He then started "Well why not?" I explained that should he damage it the insurance would not pay out. He seemed to think that a new guitar, any guitar, costs about £100!
