What about a gig review section? There's enough acomplished word-smiths on here to do a decent job of reporting on concerts. SW www.martinjwood.co.uk Great idea, Martin!

I think that's a good idea too Martin(s). In fact there's a fair few informal reviews been made already that could possibly be collected to kick things off. Anyone going to Glasto this year....? Keith

Nope. Too muddy and far away. And too busy. What about you, Keith? You heading that way this year??

Unfortunately not Martin. Failed to obtain a ticket this time. Some good stuff on there too - would love to see Billy Bragg (years since I saw him), dear ole Seasick Steve (again!), Glen Hansard, Bill Wyman (!) with Rhythm Kings, The Proclaimers, Seth (!), Martin Stephenson, Penguin Cafe, Oysterband, Stornoway, Newton Faulner, and would maybe have given the Stones a quick look too! I might try for one of the unpaid for re-issues later next month, though the chances won't be good. Sigh. Keith

As usual a very thoughtful, intelligent moderate set of views from all the posters. This to me is a very important place as I have met online and in person many people who have now become friends and whose opinions, knowledge and judgment I respect highly as well as the thoughtfulness and care of many members. This includes you Leo particularly over the activities you embarked on last year in the Middle East Then there is the quality bit, those of you who have seen and heard play are in the main excellent players I am not going to single anyone out.The luthiers like Dave and Sam who I am eternally jealous of as I can just about saw a piece of wood in half. I see some of their creations and I think WOW!!! what talent and dedication. The spammers that come on to promote themselves I can live with as I can with the trolls, after all we meet trolls in real life don't we and the internet reflect what happens in life well I think so. I would suggests a couple of stickies/threads the first being My vintage guitar or instrument, remember this is "My acoustic" not just guitars and banjoes, bongos, pianos are also acoustic instruments. Mainly cause I play one but I know that quite a few of you have them in your collection. This would be a slightly different thread to my guitar in that it might attract people who were more interested in vintage guitars. The second thread idea is My music that is people who write and play their own music might feel happier with a dedicated thread and it might encourage people who write music to seek out lyricists and vice versa For me this is a place of peace ,fun and learning and listening. I can't expect anything more from the internet. Don't worry about the size its the quality that matters :dutch-oven:

:)Some very interesting thoughts here so far. Especially for a quite difficult topic like this. Frankly speaking, I'm not quite sure if I would like to see this forum develop rapidly. Here's my 2 cents This place is a cosy little place and has indeed a very personal and clubbish touch. This is great for those who are in it, but might be a reason to back off for those who are not. From my own personal experience I know that you have to be open minded and willing to invest time and ideas to become part of a forum. Maybe not everybody wants to do that. Those who do most probably stay, but you cannot push this. The active part is entirely on the potential members side. I'm reluctant to see this place grow rapidly. Before coming here I did a mod job at the acoustic guitar section of a very big musicians board. This section alone had about 800 signed members, the whole forum had close to 200.000 members (for those who are interested: www.musiker-board.de ) The picture was a bit different to what we have here. Of course, there was a core team of about 20 to 30 users who did most of the posting. At least the interesting stuff. A big forum like that draws intended attention. With the result that 8 aut of 10 posts from new members were about just one topic: which is the best guitar for 100 quid. What I mean to say is: whatever we do, I doubt that we can have both: a) the friendly, homely, slightly chaotic place the forum is at the moment; and b) "the" place in the web where you go when you're interested in acoustic guitars. I think that there's only one way to let this place grow in a slow but healthy way. - Let us all stay openminded to everybody who might be interested in joining us - Don't overdo the off topics, because this is what makes a place an exclusive club when seen from the outside - don't be afraid to repeat interesting topics, especially for beginners. No newcomer scrolls more than 2 pages of threads backwards and will leave if he does not find what he was looking for. - try to avoid a snob attitude. Frankly speaking, would you as a young fellow with no money be attracted by a forum where the average guitar (and it's mostly about guitars, isn't it) costs a small fortune and is deffo out of reach ? Well Keith, you wanted honesty, didn't you :-) Must say i agree with this too , i love the way its quite cozy just now but without being elitist or snobby . Id like to add a couple of sudggestions if i may . How about a Scottish meet even if it was in the likes of Dumfries , Moffat , Berwick ? Also how about trying to write songs together in a thread so different members could add a line or two or maybe more then some of out more skillful members could put music to it . Hey we could even have a forum song . I myself have been a bit quiet of late as i had a really bad cold and then the whole family has been struck down by that nasty vomiting bug , so ive been keeping a low profile the past couple of weeks . Anyway great thread and an interesting read . Derek .

Paul, thanks for your kind mention - although it was the generosity and trust of forum members to someone they had never met working with a group of young people they never would that made my time in Summer 2011 so special... Derek, I put up a thread 'Collaborative Songwriting' suggesting this very idea earlier in the week. I suspect we focus on very different types of song - but I'm all for this sort of venture and would love to get involved... As for a 'Forum Song' check out my soundclick page and look for 'Forum Lament', 'Ballad of HB2' (or something!) and a few others - not exactly forum songs - but songs about the forum Oooh... Came over all self-publicist there for a moment; I do apologise!

If you fancy one in your area, just get one together - maybe start a thread asking for an initial expression interest from anyone who might be up for it and away you go.... Mind you, easier said than done; Andrew and I have been wittering on about getting a SW day organised, but we haven't done anything about it yet. Maybe this will be the year!! Hope you and the family are recovering well. Keith

Have to agree with Keith on that - there are for instance a few get together's down here in the deep South where people just meet up, usually at one or other member's houses. Paul (scorpiodog has arranged a couple of meets at his office where about a dozen get together. Ian (ianlp59) has had a series of superb get togethers at his place with about 20 people and loads of guitars. And just this weekend there are about five of us meeting up at Robbiej's to just play and enjoy music as an ad hoc "do". I would strongly encourage others to do this as it is a great way of encouraging the guitar "community" to get together and enjoy.

I would agree with Eric ... although he may not say that after I have consumed all the tea and dunked all the biscuits in a most reckless and unprofessional manner. Socmed is great but fora (??) come into their own when it comes to getting to know people then getting together.

All publicity is good publicity - I find it sad that he met many of you and you made music together.

Same themes, same manner, same lack of grip on reality, same complete lack of humility, same lack of encouragement to others. Thanks Larry for sticking up for this place (as did several others)and thanks Jonny for your well-judged post in the relevant thread. No doubt he will be following this one. Keith
