I really appreciate the "try & buy"-threads, especially when they are as elaborated and well-written as this one, and with a composition to round it off. These Tanglewood guitars sound like a steal to me, and the sound was very nice, as were the compositions. A slightly oriental feel, especially to the first one. Thanks for posting!

I'm trying to pay attention to the way a guitar I try out makes me want to play and whether it encourages musical ideas. Very difficult to judge in a shop environment unfortunately. I have a feeling that the inspirational thing you mention Keith ties in with that, in it being more likely to happen in a guitar that you found encouraged your style (loose terminology!) of playing in the shop. I'm sure there'll be a recording or two in the futures I'll inflict on share with you all. Glad that you found the thread of interest dobro. Don't ask me where the oriental hint came from - I have no ideas at all where one of these compositions is going to go when I start it. It's usually a case I just have a few chords / note combinations or phrases and I then try and find a way to try and join them together using trial and error. Mark

Nice little collection you've got going there Vikingblues and plenty of money left over from the sale of the Lowden to buy more.

vikingblues Do you strum away on your parlours or do only finger pick. I'm a fan of parlours too I love the small comfortable to hold size of a parlour. I strum about 70% of the time. Probably not the correct tool for strumming but there you go...

It's very little strumming with me. Partly down to not being able to use the little finger on the left hand much at all - limits chord play a lot. Partly down to my not being able to get into playing / singing other peoples songs and partly down to not being able to get into writing strumming sort of stuff for myself.
I don't see what's wrong with strumming on a parlour if you're in a situation where you're not going to need big volume and sound projection.
A lot of players managed to strum for many years on smaller guitars before the bigger ones came into being.
