Sound advice from Jonny there. You like the sound of the D18 and presumably it feels good in the hands. While you are saving up do go and listen to some other models. A trip to Denmark Street would be a good thing to do! This will not only give you an idea of the range of quality sound but allow you to get more of a feeling for different fingerboard widths and style and for the depth of the guitar. I love deep guitars but find them very uncomfortable to live with day to day.
If you are looking at moving into this price range have a listen to Larrivee (excellent range and value) and also the new Guild range — some of the best guitars I have played in the last year or so.

Thanks for the great advise! I will not be buying in a hurry so I will try the models you suggested if I can.

My eldest daughter has a Tacoma Dread .. loves it but it is a wee bit big for her. I notice that Forsyths in Manchester is having a sale - some of their Guilds are at a decent price. The Seagull S6 is also on offer along with plenty of other geetars. The search is 90% of the fun

One more thing about search.
When I bought my first really good guitar — a Martin J40 — I went into the store a couple of times and played three guitars for a long time. Initially I really like a Martin 000 but the more I played the guitars the more I realised that I could live with the J40 sound longer! It wasn't the first impressions that won through but a more gradual appreciation of tone and the playability!

Some instruments have a sound that makes you think wow at first hearing, and then after 30 minutes plus the realisation dawns that long exposure to the sound gets less and less appealing. That big initial impact can be very misleading. Mark

But used. You will get a better guitar, used D-18s can be found around £1000.

There are some decent alternatives to the D18, for a lot less. Recording King, Eastman, and Guild's make similar spec'd guitars for a lot less which might not be a D18, but would be around 80-90% of the D18 for around a 1/4 of the price.

Hi guys! Just to let you know that at the end I couldn’t wait another year to save £1800 for the Martin D18 and yesterday bought a Seagull S6 slim for £369.Now I can continue saving for D18 while playing a nice guitar. Thanks again for the great advice you gave me!
