Probably won't get the coverage of Bowie or Prince but a proper good musician in his day...

Not entirely unexpected, but still so sad First heard him on record with the Ian Campbell Folk Group, but I also have fond memories of seeing him on several occasions playing with Martin Carthy in the mid 1960s. The sound they made was a revelation to me, and it was wonderful to watch at close hand the interplay between them, not just musically, but also in the chats they had whilst playing. Dave would, of course be talking out of the side of his mouth, doing battle with the fiddle's chin rest and a cigarette at the same time. Haven't seen him play in more recent times, though one-time duo partner Tanya used a bow bought from him on eBay. Here's our recording of one of the tunes I remember him playing 50 years or so ago - The Hen's March to the MiddenRIP Dave. Keith

A great shame. A true giant. I have just sat and sang White Dress to myself, with memories of Sandy as well.

Like Keith - first heard him with Martin back in the 60's at a local folk club - really sad loss.

My Mum and Dad used to love watching him on the TV every week, playing with Ian Campbell's group. He and Carthy were always room-packers at Crewe Folk Club. Rags, Reels and Airs - one of favourite albums from the 60s.

One of my great heroes, one of the most influential folk musicians of his generation, there isn't a fiddle player around now that doesn't owe an enormous debt to Swarbs. With both Martin Carthy and Fairport he was part of the revolution in folk music in this country. Of course some years ago he was one of the few people that read his own obituary in the newspapers! I booked him and Martin back in the late sixties for the Orpington Folk Club. Why are all my heroes no longer with us? Off to play Smiddyburn.
