I've just spent an hour on the back porch, playing in standard tuning ...
... And it felt good !

I've promised myself I'll give another tuning a proper go once I've learned standard tuning properly, if that ever happens. Assuming it does, I reckon I'll try Drop D.

Have to confess I did drop a D occasionally. Mind you, this ragtime stuff is hard on the fingers!

All my playing is in alternate tunings...although not necessarily on purpose. Dissonance is a speciality of mine...or in lay man's terms, out of bloody tune...

With it now used so rarely, apart perhaps from a few (bearded) Luddites, isn't "standard" now a misnomer?

I enjoyed it so much I did it again this evening. All that ragtime came flooding back. Did end up in DADGAD though.

Hell, I'm a bearded, Sort-of-Luddite who plays in all manner of different tunings...including, albeit occasionally, EADGBE (in case anyone's forgotten what Standard is). By the way, can anyone tell me what DGDFCE is in posh language (e.g. something or other flat5/+9 or what have you) it's quite a favourite of mine and I haven't a clue what to call it.

Hmmm . there's a site here that has a listing of over 300 tunings, but DGDFCE ain't one of them as far as I can see. There's a few possible chord names for all those strings played open according to my Guitarator Software. Dm11no5, Cadd4/D, Em7#5addF/D, Fmaj7sus2/D, and G7sus4add6/D. An interesting tuning you use is that! Mark

Glad you're beginning to see reason, Andy! Keith I read somewhere that Ralph Towner sometimes re-tunes his 12 string and if something clicks he writes a piece, only taking note of what tuning he's using when its finished. Surely that's the point. It's not the tuning which is important but the music which is produced from it. Sorry Keith but 'seeing reason' in this context smacks a bit of music, glass cases and dogmatism...I know the post was lighthearted but many a true word, or opinion, spoken in jest.

Nick, I agree entirely that the music produced is more important than the tuning. I have made this point many times here over the years. Indeed my post was in jest, and made in response to a jocular post from fellow member known to me personally - the context makes that quite clear I'm sure - and I';m pleased to read that your post also agrees that you can see that to be so too. It's akin to the banjo-banter that happens here too. There is no suggestion of dogmatism, and I'm unsure why you felt it necessary to raise it, though I'm also glad you did feel able to. My jest was simply a jest, (hence the ) no undercurrents, no side, no attempt to disguise anything under cover of jest. I'm sorry you felt my comment to be inappropriate - there was no untoward intention behind it. Keith
