The Zoom H4 that has been mentioned a few times already is indeed a recording option that produces good results. I have the later H4n version and the internal microphones are amazingly pretty close to reaching the quality of plugging in two external condensers that cost nearly twice the price of the recorder. This later version does allow doing a recording taken by both internal microphones and two external microphones as the same time and exporting all four tracks to DAW software on a computer where they can be mixed in different proportions for a wider variety of possible tones.
The Zoom H4n is much more user friendly than other stand alone recorders I have used - some I have found myself using the manual for basic operations months after buying the thing due to my difficulties in "getting" the logic of the operational systems.
I notice Lynn mentions she uses her Zoom as an interface, but I record onto my Zoom and transfer the tracks as wav files. I did try to use it as an interface but my computer had problems with it and I ended up having to reconfigure my DAW for recording from the usual interface as my settings all got scrambled. Not the first time that trying a new interface has done this sort of thing to me.
But despite my liking of the sounds recorded on the Zoom, I do find that I have external microphones through the Alesis USB interface into the DAW as my "go to" procedure. But I think I maybe do this due to the ease of editing and doing multi takes more than for any great benefit in sound quality.
