If you have to put a pickguard on it, I'd definitely go transparent. I bought a secondhand Fylde Alchemist that already had a pickguard fitted. I hate it and wish I could remove it because for me, it ruins the aesthetic of the guitar. Besides, the guitar still has pick scratches above the soundhole and marks elsewhere on the body. Whoever owned it previously sure strummed the hell out of it.
I live with it because I bought it at a price that reflected its condition and I wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford such a guitar. It still sounds fabulous. I do think the pickguard will devalue it though if you come to resell as many people looking to buy secondhand Fyldes will want to buy one in its natural state.
That's just my opinion though. I generally don't like pickguards full stop. The tortoiseshell just looks naff to me, so if you have to do it, do consider transparent or removeable.

I have seen a few Brook guitars with pickguards and they look awful in my opinion. I don't mind them on say Martins or Gibsons (although many Gibson ones are indeed ugly) because they have that traditional American guitar look but not on traditional British made guitars. Its all personal opinions I suppose. Phil

Yes, I'd tend to agree with that Phil. I don't mind them on trad American guitars as it fits with the look. My new Larrivee has a guard and it looks fine. On Fyldes, Brooks and Tarans, a lot of attention has been given over to choosing the most beautiful woods along with distinctive purflings and rosettes. You want to let those features be the star, rather than detract from them by sticking a big ugly tortoiseshell thing on the front of it. Sorry to anyone who likes pickguards!
