Had my good old wine bottle slide for about 30 years, but dropped it today and it's now smithereens. I liked it because it was thick glass and heavy and consequently made my old acoustic sound like a freight train. Found a Perspex (?) slide in my drawer, but it's so thin and light that it sounds rubbish (*) on the acoustic. A quick Google and it appears that in those 30 years there's a whole world of new slides available - the porcelain ones look particular attractive. But are they any good? Or should I stick with the traditional?
(*) Might be me, rather than the slide...

Why not make another wine bottle one? Score round the neck of the bottle with a glass cutter; holding the base of the bottle, immerse the neck in boiling water, then iced water, repat the hot cold a time or two if necessary. The bottle should crack along the line leaving you a stunted bottle and a guitar slide - both with SHARP edges. Use some coarse abrasive paper round the inner and outer sharp edges of your new slide. Then use some progressively finer grades to whatever smoothness you want. Then play.

Small cautionary tale. I contacted Diamond re an 'Ultimate' slide in March 2016 and then received an initial, helpful email. I placed the order and supplied dimensions etc and heard nothing for a while. Then I got an email telling me that there was nothing suitable in the latest batch of tubes and, effectively, to watch this space for a short while. No problem as I wasn't in any hurry. Heard nothing for a good while so chased (politely) and heard... nothing. Still waiting to hear something so have written the whole thing off as a dead loss. Maybe I have been unlucky and others' experiences have been better but I must admit that the whole thing simply p****d me off!

I've never known him be anything but extremely helpful, and I'm sure he'd be very keen to sort out whatever's gone wrong here.

It looked such a good slide...maybe I'll give phoning a go. 2016 was not a good year and slides were well down the priority list.

Derek Not you .... it IS the perspex! Have you tried phoning Ian? I've never known him be anything but extremely helpful, and I'm sure he'd be very keen to sort out whatever's gone wrong here. It looked such a good slide...maybe I'll give phoning a go. 2016 was not a good year and slides were well down the priority list. He was very helpful a few years back on the phone and even recommended a cheaper option than the one I'd been thinking of!

Then it broke when I dropped it on a stone floor. Never mind, I'll make another one. I made another 4 and I never got the break to be smooth and parallel. The first one must have been beginner's luck. That's when I went to Diamond and never looked back.

Must have been awful, having to work your way through all that champagne in search of the perfect bottleneck. The things we guitarists have to in pursuit of artistic excellence...
