I share many of the frustrations expressed so far. But it almost has to be seen as part of the deal nowadays, for the reasons already given, except at gigs you organise yourself, and for yourself.
But inattentive/noisy/etc punters often sadly don't know better. Fellow musicians do, or at least should do. But they don't always behave much better.
One of the things that really does p*ss me off is when at singarounds/sessions etc people noodle away on their guitars (and it usually is guitars I hate to say)in between performances and even during the current performance. Rude!

Yep, went to 'hear' the excellent Dalla play at The Bell in Bath a few weeks ago. Two guys say opposite us just talked loudly throughout the whole bloody set. I kept giving them the evil stare, but didn't make much difference! p.s as an ademdum to this, I went to the Odeon to see Beauty and the Beast, and a young girl sat in front just to the right of me was on her phone texting constantly, especially when a song came on. And there are a lot of songs. My partner reached over to tell her to turn it off after a while, but again it made no difference. She obviously could not live without checking her phone every 30'seconds, and I'm not even exaggerating. No, you're not exaggerating !!! SaveSave

Actually , its more relaxing for me if everyone is talking... If everyone is dead still , and just looking at me I get all nervous and tend to clam up . Best times I've ever had in front of an audience was when everyone was chatting... Sorry , weirdo here...
