Thought I might ask for your indulgence.
I'm starting work on a new album, working with some fine, award winning musicians (more later). Inspiration has come from Linda Thompson with whom I'm friends on Facebook.
Here's a demo of one song that we will be working on, inspired by Linda's version:
Guitar is the Model F that Kathy Wingert built for me.
Cheers
Chris

Lovely, clear vocals (unlike the original by Tom ) and guitar work - excellent Phil

Lovely is that, dreadnought28 . As it's a demo...I thought the guitar was a little too 'backgroundish', I'd've liked it to be a bit more prominent in the mix.

Nice playing and good emotional singing Chris. The recording quality is excellent. However, I don't like the song. For me it's way too long and needs a bridge or a chorus to create more musical interest. Iain

Nice and clean vocals which I like. I agree with leoroberts that I think the guitar could be a little more forward in the mix. Also agree with lavaman about the song! Do us another one :-)

Fine rendition, Chris. Agree about the mixing of the guitar. Completely disagree with Lavaman and Andy Howell about the song. This is so typically a Tom Waits "how to tell a story without telling a story" song. There's plenty of melodic variety in the verse, so, in my opinion (which may, or may not, be humble) it doesn't require a chorus or middle eight. Quite different from said Mr Waits' version - you have made it yours.

A big from me. I too liked the clarity and the delivery is convincing, tough song to interpret

Terrific interpretation Chris. I'm not familiar with the song, but to me it didn't lack anything. And I thought the guitar/vocal balance was fine, though I was only listening on my phone.

Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated.
It's all about taste as far as the song goes. It's a moving story and that's the way it was written by Tom Waits. Personally I love it and that's why I recorded it. Viva la difference. Last time I made an album I sent early versions to two musical couples I know and asked for objective comments. One couple said that they liked it all except for one song that they absolutely hated and which they urged me not to include. The other couple responded saying they both thought the best song, by a mile, was the same one the other couple hated!

Good piece of singing there Chris, crystal clear recording, and very much your own version in a positive way. Well interpreted. "All about taste" as you say. I've seen people tie themselves up in knots making change after change based on feedback from others - a danger being they end up with a song that is no longer theirs. Mark

I don't worry much about feedback except if one person tells me they like a song then that is enough!

I've been listening to it again through some decent speakers? Have you uploaded s second version? the guitar seems more focussed now — perhaps it's just better listening.
It's growing on me but I do find it a bit depressing. A great vocal performance though Chris and some lovely guitar.

That was a great listen. Not my usual style I go for, but you have a quite enchanting voice which captured my ears !
On a side note, I notice you are in Lancs but close to Yorkshire. Just wondered, are you near one of my favourite mountain biking places, Gisburn Forest ?
