I have liked and been inspired by many over time - a long list - but recently have enjoyed the music of Peter Janson and Franco Morone (mostly his Celtic stuff)

Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, Norman Blake, Bill Frisell, Grady Martin, Doc Watson, Neil Young, Lightnin' Hopkins, Keb Mo, Django Reinhardt, Clarence White.
Some of these aren't purely acoustic guitarists, but have distinctive approaches to acoustic playing.

Interesting comment regarding Tommy Emmanuel as I also have seen him live twice and while he is undoubtedly a brilliant guitarist and thoroughly engaging personality, for me once the wow had peaked, his style of playing seemed to be beyond my ability to appreciate. It did not inspire me as other guitarists do as I felt the music kind of got lost in all the tricks and wizardry. I thought I was probably in a minority of 1 with this. Any way, back to favourite guitarists, here are a few of mine who I have not seen mentioned yet. Fingerstyle players - Marcel Dadi, Jerry Reed, Buster B Jones, Michael Neverisky, Bobby Gibson, Julie Ellison (another recent discovery for me) Electric players - Tim Renwick, Chris Parks (Any Trouble) Also one of my long time all round favourites who often gets overlooked, but who plays a mean guitar and other instruments is Jo Brown, check out his Jiggery Pokery album. Another great all rounder of course is Mark Knopfler. I would like to emphasise that my use of the word favourite simply relates to players I enjoy and does not imply any opinion on levels of skill or talent. It's interesting you mention Chris Parks - I was sat with Clive Gregson in the folk club the other night. He lives around the corner from me here in Uppermill. I know, I know - Prince Charles once told me never to name drop Phil

Interesting how just about all of my fav's have been mentioned, maybe with the exception of the late great Pete Huttlinger.
I was another Kicking Mule fan. Still am. I've always preferred the ragtime / country / swing side of acoustic picking rather than the blues - but a well played Delta blues still gets me, especially if it involves a slide. Rory Block does it very well and I don't think she's been mentioned. Sam Mitchell, too. But because of my penchant for country I do like Buster B Jones, and Merle Travis and Jerry Reed and, of course Richard Smith. The ragtime thing has seen me buy a few John James and Ton Van Bergyck (sp?) albums, too.
Someone else is Pat Donohue - he plays so nice and cleanly on even the most complex stuff it's scary. Laurence Juber, too. Hell, just when I thought everyone had been mentioned...

A few that I don't think have had a mention yet - all with strong voices of their own.
Leo Kottke (Folk / Blues / Jazz - lots of 12 string) Tony McManus (Celtic) Paco de Lucia (Flamenco) Pierre Bensusan (various - as long as it's DADGAD) Andres Segovia (Classical) Antonio Forcione (Wide variety, including occasional comedy)
Doesn't this thread show just how huge a number of really good guitarists there are.

Any suggestions for where to begin musically?

We listened to the first Pretenders album a lot!

Eldon Shamblin:
Oscar Moore:
Slam Stewart/John Collins/Beryl Booker:
Merle Haggard with Roy Nichols/Norm Hamlett:
Black and dead, white and dead, just as long as they're dead!
Actually thought of someone who is alive - Ernest Ranglin. Have a listen to this - the solo at the end is nuts!
