Dave and Debbie came down to see us yesterday. We had a jolly nice time. Dave brought An Fea Caol with him. I had a good old "getting to know you" session with AFC, and at the end I did a Facebook Live thingy, which is here, if you want to see it. Sorry about the fluff in the middle. I forgot the words, and that always puts me right off. I still have the strings that Joe ( Mike Floorstand) put on. It's my plan to record a few songs, then change the strings for Ernie Ball Aly Bronze and record the same songs again to show the difference in the strings. I won't do it as a vid, though. I'll put it on Soundcloud. My initial impressions of the guitar are very favourable. It's very much a Dave White Instrument. Incredible sustain, and nice note separation. It has such a clear voice. It's also incredibly comfy for sofa noodling. I'm looking forward to becoming accustomed to it over the course of the next couple of weeks.

Paul, Nice song - brought back Wallander memories - very well played as usual. I liked that a lot and it looks like AFC has the makings of a song accompaniment guitar too

Very nice wee demo Paul - serves to whet the appetite some more! The guitar and your voice are a good match. Mark

Great stuff Paul...it sounds like the guitar is going to make an excellent accompaniment instrument as well as sounding lovely in its own right. Wondering how the EB aly's have changed the tone? I've got a set of 10 to 47 Dadds to put on for my time with the guitar...see you next weekend!

I may have seemed quiet over the fortnight I’ve had An Fea Caol. I have made some recordings and they will be on Soundcloud tomorrow at the latest. It was eventful, really. Things happen to me when I have these road trip guitars. I spent a bit of time with An Fea Caol and was enjoying playing it, when an unexpected visitor turned up at home, and I had to go into host mode, so I lost a few days to that. I was determined to try out AFC with the Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze strings, so after our visitors departed, I put a set on. As I suspected it went all tinkly and bright. I was thoroughly enjoying the experience when BANG! The 3rd string broke. I didn’t have a spare of that type and didn’t want to put un unmatched string on, so I went to the local music store, but they didn’t have any. What they did have, though, were some D’Addario Nickel Bronze acoustic guitar strings. I hadn’t seen these before, so I bought some and put them on, and AFC went even more tinkly. I did a little bit of recording with all the different sets, so when I get them uploaded, you’ll be able to hear for yourselves. Anyway, I really enjoyed playing this little Terz guitar. It is very comfortable in the hand, the only thing I could have asked for were strap buttons. I found the best way to play it was either to loll on the sofa and cuddle it, or to adopt the classical guitar position with the guitar on the left knee. It doesn’t sit very well on the right knee and you have to twist to play it. It’s a nice responsive little guitar, sustains very well, and I very much like the sound port. It’s jolly pretty and the neck and fingerboard are all you could wish for. Bass response is better than I expected, but it is a small bodied guitar tuned up 3 semitones from normal, so I can’t think of a better word to describe the sound than tinkly. Thanks for letting me be part of the road trip davewhite. I handed An Fea Caol safely on to andrewjw this afternoon. We had lunch in a pub about half way between where we live. Jane was there too, and it was great to see them both again.

Great to catch up Paul scorpiodog ...one of the really good things about these road trips! We drove home to sunny South Devon through hail and sleet and spent a happy hour trying out a few songs with AFC by the kitchen table...the D 'Add nickel bronze strings sound lovely to my ears ! First impressions are excellent... I'll start another thread on phase three of the Road Trip..

The first track records my reactions to errors over the whole fortnight. The next 3 tracks are using Nickel Bronze strings, the next 3 are Aluminum Bronze and the remainder are using Phosphor Bronze.

Just had a quick flick through those Paul - you've managed to demonstrate well the versatility and dynamic range of the guitar in a wide range of styles. Very nicely done, and a good plan to try different strings. I expect they sounded/felt more different than my PC can reproduce, though I did have a slight preference for the PB set.
High Barbary is superbly done, and sounds great.
I'll be returning to these tracks for a better listen when I can.
Excellent portfolio Paul!

Really enjoyed those Paul, my initial preference is for the PBs, although like Keith I'll have another listen in a bit. My 6 year old daughter found the first track quite funny, although I had to drown out some of the emotive bits

Great to listen to these Paul...interesting to hear the difference the changes of strings made. I'm not surprised you managed to break your 3rd string...it feels particularly highly tensioned when playing the guitar. The first track nearly caused me to drown my keyboard in regurgitated coffee...that would have been an interesting insurance claim!

Good to hear the guitar in such a wide variety of styles Paul, and the demos did show how strings can amend the sound. The guitar sounds that did come through, whatever the strings, were very good. Very entertaining out-takes BTW! Mark

Paul, Sounds like you had a busy time. Like Keith I've just skimmed through them and will listen more at leisure over the coming weeks - they sound great though. Loved "Swear on a G string" to start it off What gauge string was it that broke and what gauges were the D'Addario nickel bronze set?

It was a wound 20, Dave. I’m not sure whether I kept the pack from the nickel bronze, but they were 10 - 47. I’ll have a look for the pack (dustmen haven’t been yet) and let you know the intermediate gauges if I find the pack.
I did toy with the idea of using a .017 plain string for the 3rd, but I decided to buy a new set instead.
Everybody, thank you for your kind comments. They are just rough and ready recordings. But there are no effects added. It’s recorded clean in stereo using a Zoom H2 and topped and tailed in Audacity.
