................... I think playing with other players (particularly those who are better than you!) is really good for one's timing and other skills........... Agree and identify with everything you said there, Ben. The bit quoted above is one of the best bits of advice anyone could give. And I'd add that "other players" needn't necessarily be other guitar players - in my particular case I found playing with fiddlers, whistle players, accordian players etc to be the situations in which I learned the most. Yes definitely found that being able to play in (or at least close to ) time was a real confidence booster for me at the session on Sunday.

I always practice with a metronome or drum machine. I think it's important to be able to play in the pocket well before learning how to stretch things. At least that's what I tell myself!
