The eq was courtesy of Facebook Messenger! We had spent 2 hours trying to get FaceTime and Skype to work so we took whatever we could!

Overdrive pedals have never been reviewed with such style. Can I quote you on that?

I'm back home now so have just listened to it properly and I really enjoyed it Riverman and andyhowell. Excellent Phil V Ps was the Atkin the one in Forsyths Richard? I saw it and was quite taken with the appearance which was a surprise to me. Didn't play it.

Thanks Phil. Yes, I played the 00037 Relic (similar spec to a Martin Eric Clapton but a lower profile neck, plus the aged finish) and the J45 style ‘43’ model that leoroberts and andyhowell also played on their visit to Forsyths this week. I was quite tempted by the 000 but not enough to get the credit card out. I thought the 43 had lovely trebles, but it lacked the thumpy bass that, to my ears, is an essential characteristic of that style of guitar. And the 43mm nut didn’t work for me, as you might expect. I’ve always thought that artificially aged guitars are a bit of a naff idea, to be honest, but the 000 definitely had a played in feel and sound and the aging was limited to lacquer cracking, yellowed binding and a bit of oxidisation on the tuners - all of which were tastefully done.

The 37 was kind of OK. It had something of an aged sound but nothing that moved me. The 43 felt like a Gibson and it sounded Gibson like to me when Leo was playing it but as Leo said "It just doesn't have Gibson on the headstock". I don't think I would have bought it. Got home and took out my Lucas. I then felt a lot better.

It’s a nice feeling when you get home after visiting guitar shops, and realise that you like what you already have more than anything else you played!

Riverman You are right about Forsyths. The obsession they have with security makes it very difficult to try a number of guitars properly. A completely different approach in the new B rum Guitar Guitar acoustic store — people happy to let you play and more than happy to talk about guitars.

A completely different approach in the new B rum Guitar Guitar acoustic store — people happy to let you play and more than happy to talk about guitars. I sympathise with Forsyths, they’ve had a couple of expensive guitars stolen by people who literally just walked out of the shop carrying them. Mind you, since to do so would mean descending two flights of stairs and passing the piano and sheet music/CD departments on the way, they might be better off training the staff in those departments to keep their eyes open! The only reason I tried the 000 at all was because it wasn’t clamped to its wall hanger. Come to think of it, I only bought my Fylde Orsino there a few years ago because it had just come in, and they had put it on an unclamped stand temporarily while they decided where to display it. I picked it up and the rest is history... I visited the Guitar Guitar Birmingham store a couple of years ago, and it was huge - if that space is now dedicated to acoustics it definitely sounds worthy of a return visit.
