I'll use a cheat sheet if I have to, but I prefer not.
I'm singing at a wedding on Saturday and have had 2 songs requested that I don't know well, neither have I played them before before. I have busted a gut to try to get them gig ready, and, although I have practiced and practiced, I know there is far too much chance that I will cock them up (well, one of them anyway), so I will take an annotated cheat sheet (that I am also practicing with) so that I can perform them as well as I possibly can. I don't have the luxury of only performing them when they are ingrained - Saturday is a rigid deadline.
Generally, I can learn a song reasonably quickly (well, the lyrics anyway), and I can usually make up the ones I forget!

It’s OK having idiot streets so long as your happy with your performance never being as good as it can be !!!!
