A couple more photos for you. The construction work on the mandola and octave mandolin is now complete and the next stage will be to make the bridges and tailpieces. They make a handsome couple, don’t they? Cheers Gary

Nice work Dave. I like the look of the pear. If it's not too rude, where did you get it? Cheers Gary

What is the wood? It looks nice, is it East Indian Rosewood? How wide is it at the lower bout? Would be interested to hear a soundclip when it's finished. Good to see a unconventional design, a break from the norm is a well appreciated distraction. Yep, the back and sides are Indian Rosewood. The lower bout is 370 mm; overall body size is very similar to a Martin OO. Thanks for your interest Cheers Gary

Hi Guys, I’ve just started building a guitar based on my model 2 shape. This will be a marmite moment for forum members; you’ll either love it or hate it! As it’s a bit different, I’ll post a few photos now and then. If you haven't seen one of model 2s, you find them here. I’ve just glued the back together an inlaid a very fine decorative stripe made up from ultra-thin black/red/black lines and abalone; the whole stripe (6 lines and the abalone) is just over 2.5mm wide. When you are doing fancy stuff, it really is a case of less is more! Cheers Gary

great stuff, Gary. Have you a nervous customer emailing you every two days for updates? (and, if you do, get him/her to sign up to this 'ere forum... tell them that they get a lifetime membership included in the cost of their instruments ) Hi Leo, I tend to keep my clients regularly updated so no need for nervousness on their part! Cheers Gary

Hi Guys, As you can see both the instruments now have their necks and fretboards fitted and both have been fretted. The tenor’s neck has been roughly carved and will get its final shaping next week, whilst the octave’s is still square. Cheers Gary

All I can say is that having the adjustment at the head suits my style of building. I use a dovetail joint on the neck that is glued in place and I have a brace under the fret board that would have to be drilled through to accommodate an adjustment tool; those two factors put me off. Any potential weakness at the head is countered by a spliced head joint and a volute on the back of the head. Thanks for your interest. Cheers Gary

They're both looking really good, Gary How long d'you reckon is still to go? Thanks Leo; time wise, I'm aiming for late October/early November. My progress always looks slow, but I tend to have about 4 instruments on the go at the same time. I think that building over a prolonged period, allowing wood to acclimatise at different stages, helps to produce a dimensionaly stable instrument. Cheers Gary More soon.............

The Octave mandolin has finally caught up with the Tenor mandola and you can see some pictures of this double commission’s progress below. I’ve just routed a rebate around the edges of them both, ready for the hardwood bindings. The photo gives a clear illustration of why linings are important! You can also see the 12mm holes for jack-socket/pre-amps.

As promised, here are a couple of photos of the matching tenor mandola and octave mandolin that I'm currently working on. Below, you can see that I've just carved my signature pointed “volutes” on the back of the heads of both instruments. Although the shape is to an extent ornamental, the volute does help to strengthen the neck/head joint; particularly important with the skinny necks of the mandolin family. You can read a detailed account about my neck construction in this blog post- guitar-maker.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/making-neck-blank.htmlThe rosewood and spruce body of the tenor is now together; it’s just a few steps ahead of the octave. You can see how the overall design is in keeping with my "Standard" Mandolins.More soon................. Cheers Gary
